J-1 Visa Pediatric Cardiologist Jobs
Pediatric Cardiologist positions in the U.S. are typically available to internationally trained physicians through the J-1 Physician program, administered by ECFMG as the designated sponsor. Securing sponsorship requires a U.S. host institution, a completed DS-2019, and awareness that most clinical J-1 Physician exchange visitors are subject to the two-year home residency requirement.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in Pediatric Cardiologist
Verify your ECFMG certification before applying
ECFMG is the sole designated J-1 sponsor for physicians in clinical training. Your ECFMG certification must be current before any host institution can initiate the DS-2019 process, so resolve any gaps in your medical credentials first.
Target academic children's hospitals with fellowship programs
Pediatric Cardiology fellowships at academic medical centers are the most direct pathway to a J-1 Physician placement. Programs accredited by ACGME routinely work with ECFMG and are structured to host international exchange visitors in clinical training.
Search J-1-compatible roles using Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter U.S. employer listings by J-1 compatibility, focusing on Pediatric Cardiologist and pediatric cardiology fellowship roles at host institutions that have previously supported international physicians.
Clarify the two-year home residency requirement early
Most J-1 Physician exchange visitors are subject to the two-year home residency requirement under INA Section 212(e). Confirm whether your home country or your U.S. funding source triggers this obligation before accepting a host offer, since it affects future visa transitions.
Align your training plan with pediatric cardiology subspecialty objectives
ECFMG requires a detailed training plan signed by both you and your host institution supervisor. Your objectives must map to recognized pediatric cardiology competencies, including echocardiography, cardiac catheterization, or electrophysiology, depending on your subspecialty focus.
Confirm the host institution's J-1 compliance infrastructure
Ask the program coordinator whether the institution has a dedicated international scholar office that liaisons with ECFMG. Hosts without established compliance staff often experience DS-2019 delays that push back your start date.

Find Pediatric Cardiologist JobsPediatric Cardiologist J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to Pediatric Cardiologists?
Pediatric Cardiologists entering the U.S. for clinical training or fellowship use the J-1 Physician category, administered exclusively by ECFMG as the Department of State-designated sponsor. This category is distinct from Research Scholar, which applies to non-clinical research positions. Your host institution is typically an academic medical center or children's hospital, not the visa sponsor itself.
How do I find U.S. host institutions open to J-1 Physician exchange visitors?
Migrate Mate lets you search for Pediatric Cardiologist roles and fellowship positions at U.S. employers that have historically hosted J-1 exchange visitors. Filtering by J-1 compatibility saves time compared to contacting programs individually, since many fellowship coordinators list sponsorship openness inconsistently across institutional websites.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect my ability to stay in the U.S. after my fellowship?
Yes. Most J-1 Physicians are subject to the two-year home residency requirement, meaning you must return to your home country for two years before switching to an H-1B, O-1, or immigrant visa. A waiver is available through Conrad 30 state programs, a U.S. federal agency request, or a claim of exceptional hardship, but each path has specific eligibility conditions and timelines.
What documents does a Pediatric Cardiology fellowship program need to initiate my J-1 sponsorship?
The host program submits a sponsorship application to ECFMG that includes your signed training plan, evidence of your medical degree and ECFMG certification, your passport, financial support documentation, and English proficiency evidence if your medical training was not conducted in English. ECFMG then issues the DS-2019, which you use to apply for your J-1 visa at a U.S. consulate.
Can a Pediatric Cardiologist use the J-1 Research Scholar category instead of the Physician category?
Only if the position is purely research-based with no patient care responsibilities. If your role involves any clinical duties, diagnosing patients, or performing procedures, ECFMG's Physician category is required. Research Scholar is appropriate for bench or translational research in pediatric cardiology at a university or research institute where clinical practice is entirely excluded from your program objectives.
