Position Title:
Visiting Assistant Professor Electrical & Computer Engineering
Position Type:
Full time
Location:
Dana Engineering Building
Categories:
Faculty Exempt
Job Summary:
The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) at Bucknell University invites applications for two full-time, in-person, one-year Visiting Assistant Professor positions beginning in the fall of 2026. One position is primarily computer engineering focused and the other is primarily electrical engineering focused. We seek enthusiastic educators who desire a student-centered environment and that value the intersection of a premier engineering education and a liberal arts context.
Our department is characterized by small class sizes, close faculty-student interaction, hands-on experiences and a curriculum that focuses on engineering design. We are a collegial group of 11 faculty/staff members excited to mentor new colleagues and provide a supportive atmosphere for professional growth. These positions are ideal for candidates who are passionate about undergraduate education and wish to gain experience in teaching and learning.
Job Duties:
Teaching & Curriculum:
- Teach ECE courses to ECE students and possibly non-majors
- Each position will carry a six-course load for the year (where lectures are 1 credit and labs are half a credit). The specific course load will be negotiated with the chair such that it complements the existing faculty experience and student interest.
- Courses will likely include sophomore, junior, and senior year courses in ECE. There may be an opportunity to teach an advanced elective in an area that connects with student interest.
- Most courses within the curriculum include a lab.
- Prior course materials will be available for use and adaptation, if needed.
Professional Development & Service:
Visiting faculty at Bucknell have access to the same resources as permanent faculty including:
- Service opportunities: If interested, visiting faculty can engage in and learn about assessment, student advising, curriculum maintenance, and other administrative aspects of the department.
- Research Opportunities: While teaching is the primary focus, candidates are encouraged to continue their technical research or engage in Engineering Education Research (EER) using the university’s extensive resources.
- Professional development: Access the teaching and learning resources on campus including the Teaching and Learning Center which offers relevant programming and support for developing educators.
Qualifications
- Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Engineering Education with an ECE background, or a closely related field by the start of employment.
- Applicants with relevant certifications or experience in teaching and learning are encouraged to apply.
Application requires:
- A cover letter clearly articulating your interest in joining the Bucknell University ECE department and how your experiences, knowledge, and/or past accomplishments make you an excellent candidate.
- Curriculum vitae (CV).
- Instead of submitting a typical Teaching Statement, please write a story about a positive or negative teaching or learning experience that significantly impacted you. Explain why it was impactful, why you chose this particular experience, and how it formed your thoughts on teaching and learning. (max 3 pages)
- Candidates selected to progress in the interview process will be requested to provide contact information for three confidential references.
For full consideration, applications should be received by March 1. Questions about the position, the department, or Bucknell should be directed to Rich Kozick (kozick@bucknell.edu).
Benefits:
Eligible full- and part-time employees are compensated beyond base salary through our total rewards package that includes (but is not limited to):
- Flexible scheduling options determined by role;
- Medical, prescription drug, vision, dental, life, and long-term disability insurance options
- An outstanding 10% employer contribution to your retirement plan (no contribution requirement for non-exempt positions)
- Full-time and part-time members of the faculty and staff are eligible for tuition remission for themselves. Additionally, full-time members of the faculty and staff are eligible for tuition remission for their spouse/spousal equivalent and are eligible for various tuition programs for their children. Credit for full-time benefits eligible employment at other institutions of higher education will be applied to waiting periods.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Computer Systems Engineer
Align your credentials to specialty occupation standards
Review the O*NET profile for Computer Systems Engineers before applying. Confirm your degree field maps directly to systems engineering, computer science, or a closely related discipline, since mismatched credentials are a leading reason DS-2019 applications stall at the sponsor review stage.
Distinguish Trainee from Research Scholar category eligibility
If you're an early-career professional with one to five years of post-graduation experience, the Trainee category applies. If your role involves academic research at a university or laboratory, Research Scholar is the correct category. Applying under the wrong category forces a restart with the designated sponsor.
Target host employers with existing sponsor relationships
Many host employers in systems engineering already work with a designated sponsor organization like Cultural Vistas or AIPT. Use Migrate Mate to find Computer Systems Engineer roles at organizations already familiar with J-1 host agreements, which shortens the time between offer and DS-2019 issuance.
Build a training plan before negotiating your offer
Trainee category J-1 applications require a formal Training or Internship Placement Plan signed by you, your host employer, and the designated sponsor. Draft a detailed week-by-week learning objective outline for your systems engineering role before your offer letter is finalized, so the sponsor can approve it without back-and-forth delays.
Verify whether your home country triggers the two-year rule
Some Computer Systems Engineer J-1 holders from countries on the State Department's Exchange Visitor Skills List face a two-year home residency requirement after their program ends. Check the State Department's published Skills List for your country before accepting a host placement, since this requirement affects any future H-1B or immigrant visa filing.
Confirm your host employer's prevailing wage compliance
J-1 Trainee and Research Scholar programs require compensation that meets program-specific adequacy standards. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for Computer Systems Engineer roles in your host employer's location, and confirm the offered rate satisfies DOL guidelines before the training plan is submitted.

Find Computer Systems Engineer JobsComputer Systems Engineer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Computer Systems Engineer role?
The Trainee category fits most working professionals with a degree in computer science, systems engineering, or a related field plus at least one year of post-graduation experience. If your role is based at a university or national research laboratory and focuses on academic or scientific research, the Research Scholar category applies instead. Current students in a degree program may qualify under the Intern category for shorter placements.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa as a Computer Systems Engineer?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your employer. Organizations like Cultural Vistas, AIPT, or IIE issue the DS-2019 form and are responsible for program oversight and regulatory compliance. Your hiring company is the host employer. It provides the work placement and signs the training plan, but it cannot issue a DS-2019 on its own.
How do I find Computer Systems Engineer host employers that support J-1 placements?
Search Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers actively hiring for Computer Systems Engineer roles with J-1 visa sponsorship in mind. Because J-1 host agreements require employer cooperation with a designated sponsor, targeting organizations already familiar with that process significantly reduces placement delays. Filtering by role and visa type on Migrate Mate surfaces the most relevant opportunities.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to Computer Systems Engineers?
It depends on your home country and your specific J-1 category. The State Department publishes a Skills List identifying countries whose nationals in certain technical fields, including systems engineering and computing, must return home for two years after their J-1 program before changing to H-1B or immigrant visa status. Government-funded programs and certain bilateral agreements can also trigger the requirement regardless of Skills List status.
What documents does my host employer need to prepare before the DS-2019 is issued?
Your host employer must complete a signed Training or Internship Placement Plan detailing your learning objectives by phase, your supervision structure, and your role-specific technical activities as a Computer Systems Engineer. The designated sponsor reviews this plan for adequacy before issuing the DS-2019. Employers unfamiliar with J-1 host agreements often underestimate the level of specificity required in the training plan, which is the most common source of delays.
