About Anthropic
Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
About The Role
Anthropic is seeking a Program Manager to own and drive our student outreach strategy, establishing Claude as the AI platform of choice for the next generation of builders, researchers, and creators at universities worldwide. You'll lead flagship programs including the Claude Campus Ambassador Program and Claude Builder Clubs, while developing new initiatives that embody Anthropic's mission of helping humanity navigate the AI transition. This is a high-ownership role where you'll define the vision, build the infrastructure, and personally drive execution for how Anthropic engages with student communities globally. Beyond keeping programs running smoothly, you'll make real strategic decisions and own the student narrative company-wide. We're looking for someone who thrives with significant autonomy, can operate effectively with ambiguity, and has the judgment to make consequential calls about where we invest our resources.
Responsibilities
- Lead the Claude Campus Ambassador Program, recruiting, training, and supporting student ambassadors at universities worldwide
- Build and scale Claude Builder Clubs to foster student communities around AI development
- Design and execute brand activations and event programming tailored for student audiences
- Develop overall strategy and positioning for Claude with the student persona
- Manage student hackathon partnerships at scale, including sponsorships, judging, and mentorship programs
- Lead outreach efforts to grow Claude awareness and usage on university campuses globally
- Develop new programs that apply Anthropic's mission of helping humanity through the AI transition to the student audience
- Collaborate with product, sales, developer relations, marketing and communications teams to ensure student programs align with broader company goals
- Track and report on program metrics, continuously optimizing for impact and scale
Qualifications
Must-haves
- 5+ years of experience in program management, developer relations, community building, or campus engagement, with increasing scope and ownership over time
- Proven track record of building and scaling ambassador or community programs in education or edtech space
- Track record of making strategic decisions with incomplete information and delivering results
- Experience operating autonomously and driving outcomes without heavy oversight
- Strong communication skills—you'll represent Anthropic to university leadership, partners, and across internal teams
- Proven ability to manage complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives while keeping execution sharp
- Comfort with travel for campus events and hackathons (estimated 5-10%)
Nice-to-haves
- Experience building campus or student programs at a major technology company
- Background in hackathon organization or developer community ecosystems
- Technical fluency or hands-on experience with AI/ML
- International program management experience across multiple regions
- Experience with brand strategy or experiential marketing
The annual compensation range for this role is listed below. For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role.
Annual Salary
$255,000—$320,000 USD
Logistics
Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience
Required field of study: A field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience
Minimum years of experience: Years of experience required will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position
Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.
Visa sponsorship: We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this.
We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.
Your safety matters to us.
To protect yourself from potential scams, remember that Anthropic recruiters only contact you from @anthropic.com email addresses. In some cases, we may partner with vetted recruiting agencies who will identify themselves as working on behalf of Anthropic. Be cautious of emails from other domains. Legitimate Anthropic recruiters will never ask for money, fees, or banking information before your first day. If you're ever unsure about a communication, don't click any links—visit anthropic.com/careers directly for confirmed position openings.
How We're Different
We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills. The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.
Come work with us!
Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Customer Program Manager
Frame your training plan around client lifecycle management
Designated sponsors require a structured training plan before issuing your DS-2019. Map your objectives to concrete skills like customer onboarding, escalation protocols, and renewal forecasting so the plan reflects what the host employer will actually supervise.
Verify whether your role triggers the home residency requirement
Some Customer Program Manager placements involve government funding or skills on the J-1 exchange list, which triggers a two-year home residency requirement. Confirm this with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer, since it affects future visa transitions.
Target companies with existing international training infrastructure
Host employers unfamiliar with J-1 hosting obligations often stall or withdraw offers. Focus your search on companies that already employ international professionals in client-facing roles, as they're more likely to have HR processes that accommodate designated sponsor requirements.
Search Migrate Mate to find employers open to J-1 hosting
Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. companies advertising Customer Program Manager roles with international sponsorship. Filtering by sponsorship history helps you avoid employers who haven't hosted exchange visitors before and are unlikely to engage a designated sponsor.
Align your experience level with the correct J-1 category
Current students pursuing practical experience apply under the Intern category, while professionals with a degree and at least one year of related work experience qualify under Trainee. Applying under the wrong category is a common reason designated sponsors reject applications.
Prepare documentation that connects your degree to program management
Designated sponsors evaluate whether your academic background justifies placement in a Customer Program Manager role. Gather transcripts, employer letters, and a brief competency summary linking your credentials to account management, cross-functional coordination, or customer success functions.

Find Customer Program Manager JobsCustomer Program Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Customer Program Manager role?
It depends on your status and experience. Current students or recent graduates seeking practical exposure typically qualify under the Intern category. Professionals who hold a degree and have at least one year of relevant work experience in client management, account operations, or program coordination qualify under the Trainee category. Specialists with recognized expertise may qualify under the Specialist category in some cases.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa if a company hires me as a Customer Program Manager?
The hiring company is your host employer, not your visa sponsor. Your J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization such as CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT. That organization issues your DS-2019 form, approves your training plan, and monitors your program compliance. The host employer works alongside the designated sponsor but does not issue the visa directly.
How do I find Customer Program Manager positions where the employer is willing to host a J-1 exchange visitor?
Search Migrate Mate to identify U.S. companies posting Customer Program Manager roles with international sponsorship openings. Many host employers are open to J-1 hosting but don't advertise it explicitly, so filtering by sponsorship history and reaching out directly to describe the J-1 hosting process can be effective once you've identified a good target.
Does a Customer Program Manager role on a J-1 visa come with a two-year home residency requirement?
It depends on the funding source and your home country's skills list. If the exchange program is government-funded or your occupation appears on the J-1 skills list maintained by your home country, you may be subject to the two-year home residency requirement before changing to certain other visa statuses. Confirm this with your designated sponsor before signing an offer, since it affects future H-1B or green card timelines.
What does the training plan for a Customer Program Manager J-1 placement need to include?
Your designated sponsor requires a detailed training plan before issuing the DS-2019. For a Customer Program Manager role, the plan should outline specific competencies the host will teach, such as customer onboarding workflows, escalation management, account review cycles, and cross-functional coordination. Generic descriptions of job duties are typically insufficient. The host employer must agree to supervise and evaluate you against the plan's stated objectives.
