Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as an Electrical Engineering Intern
Align your training plan with your degree
Your DS-2019 training plan must directly connect to your current electrical engineering coursework. Document specific skills you'll develop, such as circuit design or power systems analysis, before approaching any host employer or designated sponsor.
Confirm your host employer's EE infrastructure
Host employers must provide supervised, field-relevant work. Verify that the company has licensed electrical engineers on staff who can sign off on your training objectives, not just HR personnel who handle general internship paperwork.
Search for J-1-friendly roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter U.S. electrical engineering intern roles at employers with J-1 hosting history. Finding a host that has worked with designated sponsors before cuts weeks off the DS-2019 coordination process.
Match your wage to DOL prevailing standards
Your host employer must pay at least the prevailing wage for the role and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the wage level for electrical engineering intern roles in your target city before negotiating your offer.
Submit your DS-2019 application with lead time
Designated sponsors such as CIEE or Cultural Vistas typically need four to six weeks to review your training plan and issue the DS-2019. Applying to your host employer without factoring in this window puts your start date at risk.

Find Electrical Engineering Intern JobsElectrical Engineering Intern J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to electrical engineering internships?
The J-1 Intern category applies if you're currently enrolled in a degree program and the internship is directly related to your field of study. If you've graduated within the past 12 months, you may qualify under the Trainee category instead, which has different training plan requirements and a longer maximum program duration of 18 months.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa, and what role does the host employer play?
Your J-1 visa sponsor is a State Department-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or CIEE, that issues your DS-2019, monitors your program compliance, and acts as your official point of contact with the U.S. government. The hiring company is your host employer, not your sponsor. You need both: a host employer willing to submit a training plan and a designated sponsor willing to approve and administer it.
How do I find U.S. employers that have hosted J-1 electrical engineering interns before?
Migrate Mate lets you search electrical engineering intern roles at U.S. employers with J-1 hosting history, which narrows your list to companies already familiar with training plan requirements and DS-2019 coordination. Targeting experienced host employers significantly reduces the back-and-forth during the sponsorship approval process.
Can my J-1 Intern program cover hardware lab or fieldwork placements?
Yes, provided the training plan specifically describes the hands-on activities, the equipment or systems involved, and the supervising engineer responsible for your development. Designated sponsors will scrutinize placements that involve high-voltage systems or utility infrastructure, so your training objectives need to be written with that level of specificity to get DS-2019 approval.
What happens if my host employer cancels before my program starts?
If your host employer backs out after the DS-2019 is issued, you have a 30-day grace period in J-1 status to find a replacement host through the same designated sponsor or transfer to a new one. Notify your sponsor immediately, as they are required to report program changes to the State Department's Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, known as SEVIS, within a set timeframe.
