Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Full Stack Developer
Align your portfolio with U.S. stack conventions
Host employers evaluating J-1 Trainee candidates expect project work that maps to their production environment. Document your experience with specific frameworks, cloud platforms, and CI/CD tools in your portfolio before outreach begins.
Confirm your category before contacting employers
If you're currently enrolled in a degree program, you qualify for the J-1 Intern category. If you've graduated, you fall under Trainee. Getting this wrong delays DS-2019 issuance and can derail an offer that's already in progress.
Search Migrate Mate for J-1-aligned tech roles
Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers actively hosting exchange visitors in software development roles. Filtering by visa type saves time you'd otherwise spend cold-contacting companies unfamiliar with J-1 host obligations.
Request a training plan outline from your host employer
Your designated sponsor, whether CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or another State Department-designated organization, requires a completed DS-7002 training plan before issuing your DS-2019. Ask the employer to draft this document early so sponsor review doesn't stall your start date.
Check prevailing wage requirements using OFLC Wage Search
J-1 Trainees must be paid at least the local prevailing wage for their role. Look up the Software Developer wage level for your host city through OFLC Wage Search before the offer letter is finalized to avoid a renegotiation at the sponsor review stage.
Understand the two-year home residency rule before accepting
Some J-1 participants from countries with bilateral exchange agreements are subject to a two-year home residency requirement after program completion. USCIS determines applicability based on your nationality and funding source, so clarify your status before signing an offer.

Find Full Stack Developer JobsFull Stack Developer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to Full Stack Developer roles?
Current students completing a degree in computer science or a related field typically fall under the J-1 Intern category. Professionals who have already graduated and are gaining structured training with a U.S. host employer qualify under the J-1 Trainee category. The distinction matters because each category has different eligibility requirements, maximum program lengths, and DS-7002 training plan obligations.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa as a Full Stack Developer?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT, not your host employer. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, reviews your training plan, and monitors compliance throughout your program. Your host company is responsible for the day-to-day work and for supporting the paperwork your sponsor requires, but it does not hold the sponsorship designation itself.
How do I find U.S. tech employers willing to host J-1 exchange visitors?
Search Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers in software development that are open to hosting J-1 exchange visitors. Most general job boards don't filter by J-1 host history, so targeted searches save significant time. When you reach out, be specific about your program category, expected start date, and the name of your intended designated sponsor so employers understand their host obligations upfront.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect Full Stack Developers on J-1?
It can. USCIS applies the two-year home residency requirement to J-1 participants whose home country is listed in the Exchange Visitor Skills List, or who received government funding. Full Stack Developers from certain countries in those categories must return home for two years before applying for an H-1B or a green card. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before accepting a host offer, since this requirement affects your long-term U.S. career path.
Can a J-1 Full Stack Developer work remotely or at multiple host sites?
Your DS-2019 and DS-7002 training plan specify the approved host organization and work location. Remote or hybrid arrangements must be disclosed to your designated sponsor before the program starts, and any change in work site during the program requires sponsor approval. Working primarily at an unapproved location can jeopardize your J-1 status, since the sponsor is responsible for monitoring the training environment defined in your plan.
