Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as an Information Security Engineer
Align your credentials to specialty occupation standards
Before applying, confirm your degree and experience map to the Information Security Engineer occupation classification in O*NET. Designated sponsors and host employers both scrutinize credential alignment during DS-2019 eligibility review.
Verify your program category before outreach
Current students typically qualify under the Intern category, while professionals with a degree and at least one year of relevant experience qualify under Trainee. Applying under the wrong category delays your DS-2019 issuance and can derail an otherwise strong application.
Target host employers with active security clearance infrastructure
Government contractors, federal agencies, and regulated financial institutions are the most reliable host employers for information security roles. Use Migrate Mate to filter for U.S. organizations that actively place J-1 exchange visitors in technical engineering positions.
Build a training plan that satisfies DOL skill-development criteria
Your designated sponsor requires a structured Training or Internship Placement Plan covering specific technical competencies. Frame your plan around measurable outcomes like threat modeling, incident response protocols, or security architecture skills rather than vague on-the-job exposure.
Confirm your host employer's DS-2019 coordination timeline
Once a host employer extends an offer, the designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, which can take two to four weeks. Ask the employer to initiate sponsor coordination immediately after the offer, not after you accept, to avoid gaps before your intended start date.
Check whether your role triggers the two-year home residency requirement
Information security roles funded by a government or international organization, or citizens of countries on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, may be subject to the two-year home residency requirement. USCIS and the State Department both review this during consular processing, so confirm your status before accepting an offer.

Find Information Security Engineer JobsInformation Security Engineer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits an Information Security Engineer role?
Most information security professionals enter on the Trainee category, which is designed for foreign nationals who have a degree in a relevant field and at least one year of post-degree work experience. Current students still enrolled in a degree program may qualify under the Intern category instead. Research-focused roles at universities or government labs may fall under the Research Scholar or Specialist categories depending on the scope of work.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for an Information Security Engineer?
The J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas, IIE, or CIEE, not the employer. The hiring company is your host organization. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019 form, monitors program compliance, and signs off on your training plan. Your employer facilitates the placement but does not hold the sponsoring authority that an H-1B employer would.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to information security roles?
It may. The requirement typically applies if your exchange program is funded by your home country's government or a U.S. government agency, if your home country appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List maintained by the State Department, or if your J-1 program is in a specialty designated as needed in your home country. Information security is considered a critical skill in many countries, so confirm your specific situation with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting a J-1 Information Security Engineer?
Most employers do not advertise J-1 host positions explicitly, which makes direct role discovery difficult. Migrate Mate surfaces U.S. employers and open roles that align with J-1 exchange visitor placements, helping you identify organizations in sectors like defense contracting, financial services, and technology that regularly work with designated sponsors to host technical engineers.
What documents does a designated sponsor typically require from an Information Security Engineer applicant?
Designated sponsors generally require a completed training plan detailing the specific skills you will develop, proof of your degree and transcripts, evidence of English proficiency, a letter of support from the host employer, and proof of health insurance coverage meeting State Department minimums. For the Trainee category, you also need documentation showing at least one year of post-degree professional experience in information security or a closely related field.
