Your Job
If you're a student who genuinely enjoys figuring out why something broke, is curious about how AI can change the way support works, and wants real responsibility on a fast-paced team - this co-op was designed for you.
Our team supports the applications, data pipelines, and integrations that keep Flint Hills Resources running - and we're actively transforming how that support gets done. AI agents, automation workflows, and smarter monitoring aren't future plans here; they're work in progress, and you'll be part of it.
Based on-site in Wichita, Kansas. Flexible hours (15-30 hrs/week) scheduled around your classes, primarily between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM M-F.
This position is structured as a co-op with the potential to transition into an internship in Summer 2025 or 2026.
What You Will Do
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to data systems, data flows, and complex integrations - real issues, not simulated ones
- Investigate root causes of recurring problems, working alongside IT teams, end users, and vendors to find durable solutions
- Monitor alerts and alarms to protect the reliability of critical data and business processes
- Build and maintain documentation that supports both the team and end users
- Actively use the team's AI toolset to analyze problems, automate support processes, and drive identified automation opportunities to completion
- Collaborate with product teams to stay ahead of upcoming changes and contribute to better supportability
- Develop a working understanding of how the technology stack connects to real business outcomes
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
- Currently pursuing a degree or technical certificate in Information Technology, Computer Science, MIS, or a related field
- You're curious - you don't just fix things, you want to understand why they broke
- Foundational SQL knowledge: able to write or read basic queries
- Strong communicator who can explain technical issues clearly to non-technical stakeholders
- Genuinely interested in AI tools and what they can do - not just aware they exist
What Will Put You Ahead
- Previous experience in IT support, troubleshooting, or customer service
- Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, TypeScript, or .NET
- Exposure to event-driven or API-based integrations
- Curiosity about AWS services (Lambda, S3, CloudWatch)
- Interest in graph databases, particularly Neo4j
- You've already experimented with AI tools on your own - for schoolwork, side projects, or just to see what they can do

Document your IT credentials before applying
Gather transcripts, certifications (CompTIA A+, ITIL, Microsoft), and a degree equivalency evaluation if your qualifications are from outside the U.S. Designated sponsors review these to confirm you meet the Trainee or Intern category requirements before issuing a DS-2019.
Distinguish Intern from Trainee eligibility early
The Intern category requires current enrollment in a degree program, while Trainee is for professionals with at least one year of IT work experience post-graduation. Applying under the wrong category forces a restart, so confirm your status before targeting host employers.
Target host employers with structured IT training programs
Hosts must complete a formal Training or Internship Placement Plan (DS-7002) outlining your specific IT support objectives. Companies with established IT departments and onboarding frameworks are far more likely to satisfy this requirement than small or informal operations.
Search Migrate Mate to find J-1-aligned IT roles
Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers actively hosting exchange visitors in technical support roles. Filtering by J-1-compatible positions saves time versus cold-applying to employers unfamiliar with the DS-7002 training plan requirement.
Clarify the two-year home residency rule upfront
Some J-1 participants are subject to a two-year home-country physical presence requirement before changing status or obtaining certain immigrant or nonimmigrant visas. Confirm with your designated sponsor whether your specific situation triggers this requirement before accepting a host offer.
Verify your host employer's E-Verify enrollment status
Most designated sponsors require host organizations to be enrolled in E-Verify to confirm work authorization. Ask the host directly before your training plan is submitted, since non-enrolled employers can disqualify an otherwise complete application at the final stage.

Find IT Support Analyst JobsIT Support Analyst J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to IT Support Analyst roles?
Current students enrolled in an IT-related degree program typically qualify under the Intern category, while professionals who have graduated and have at least one year of relevant work experience qualify under the Trainee category. The distinction matters because each category has different eligibility documentation requirements and maximum program durations, and your designated sponsor will issue your DS-2019 only under the category you actually meet.
Who sponsors a J-1 visa for an IT Support Analyst position?
The J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT, not your employer. The employer acts as the host organization and agrees to supervise your training. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, reviews your Training Plan (DS-7002), and maintains compliance oversight throughout your exchange program. Conflating the two roles is a common source of confusion during the application process.
How do I find U.S. employers willing to host J-1 IT Support Analysts?
Use Migrate Mate to search for IT Support Analyst roles at U.S. employers that are open to hosting exchange visitors. Many employers are unfamiliar with the J-1 host requirements, including the DS-7002 training plan and E-Verify enrollment, so targeting companies already experienced with exchange visitor programs significantly increases your chances of a successful placement.
Is there a cap or lottery for J-1 Intern and Trainee visas?
No. The J-1 visa has no annual numerical cap and no lottery system, unlike the H-1B visa. New DS-2019 forms can be issued year-round by designated sponsors. Processing timelines depend on your sponsor's internal review process and U.S. consulate scheduling, but you're not competing against a fixed quota of available slots.
What does the DS-7002 training plan require for an IT Support Analyst?
The DS-7002 must outline specific IT support learning objectives, the supervision structure, and measurable outcomes for each phase of your program. For IT Support Analyst roles, this typically includes documented exposure to ticketing systems, network troubleshooting, hardware and software support, and help desk procedures. Your host employer completes the plan, but your designated sponsor must review and approve it before your DS-2019 is issued. Vague or generic plans are a leading reason for sponsor rejection.
