Posting Summary
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Rutgers University invites applications for a postdoctoral research position to collaborate with Prof. Renyu Hu on the characterization of small exoplanets in the era of James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The position will begin on or after September 1, 2026.
The successful candidate will work at the forefront of exoplanet research and will have the opportunities to extract scientific results from multiple JWST programs, develop and apply advanced atmospheric and surface models, and integrate observational and theoretical approaches to study the evolution and climates of small exoplanets. Specific research activities may include one or more of the following:
1. data reduction and analysis, including the development of new techniques and customized pipelines;
2. planet characterization combining space-based observations with ground-based, high-resolution spectroscopy;
3. modeling of exoplanet atmospheres, including radiative transfer and photochemistry across diverse planetary scenarios;
4. simulations of the formation and evolution of small exoplanets, including surface and geological processes.
The postdoctoral researcher may focus on one or more of these areas. The application and development of AI/ML methods to enhance and accelerate research is also encouraged.
The postdoc will be encouraged and supported in pursuing independent research and professional development. The postdoc will also be supported in developing new science cases for future observations. The integration of modeling and observations provides strong potential for impactful and transformative discoveries.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy is located in Piscataway, NJ, on the flagship campus of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. The campus is approximately 45 minutes from New York City, and the area features several leading astrophysics departments and institutes, facilitating rich intellectual exchange and collaborations.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in Medical Science Liaison
Document your scientific credentials precisely
Compile your therapeutic area expertise, publications, and advanced degree transcripts before approaching host employers. J-1 visa Trainee and Research Scholar applications require detailed evidence linking your background to the MSL role's clinical and scientific functions.
Target biotech and pharma companies with established J-1 host agreements
Companies that already hold active training plans with a designated sponsor process J-1 trainees faster. Search for medical affairs or clinical science postings that reference exchange visitor programs or international fellowship structures in the job description.
Clarify which J-1 category applies to your career stage
The Trainee category suits professionals within five years of graduation or last employment. Research Scholar fits those conducting independent scientific inquiry. MSL roles requiring field medical activities typically align with Trainee, while medical affairs research functions may qualify under Research Scholar.
Verify the training plan covers field-based MSL activities
Your DS-7002 training plan must specifically describe key opinion leader engagement, scientific exchange, and clinical education duties. Generic plans listing only lab or office tasks can trigger sponsor review delays or compliance questions from USCIS.
Use Migrate Mate to find MSL roles open to J-1 candidates
Filter by J-1 sponsorship availability to surface medical affairs and clinical science positions where host employers have indicated willingness to work with a designated sponsor organization. This cuts research time significantly compared to manually screening standard job postings.
Confirm the two-year home residency requirement early in your process
Many J-1 participants in research or medical fields are subject to the two-year home-country physical presence requirement before changing to certain U.S. visa categories. Identify your requirement status before accepting a host offer to plan your long-term U.S. career path.
Medical Science Liaison J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Medical Science Liaison role?
Most MSL positions fall under the J-1 Trainee category if you're within five years of your degree or last relevant employment. Professionals conducting independent medical or scientific research may qualify under Research Scholar instead. The designated sponsor, not the host employer, makes the final determination based on your credentials and the submitted training plan.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for an MSL position?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, that issues your DS-2019 form and monitors your program compliance. The pharma, biotech, or medical device company where you'll work is the host employer. These are two separate entities with distinct responsibilities, and conflating them causes confusion during the offer process.
Can I use Migrate Mate to find MSL roles that accommodate J-1 sponsorship?
Yes. Migrate Mate lets you filter specifically for U.S. employers and medical affairs roles that are open to J-1 exchange visitors. Because many standard MSL job postings don't mention visa category compatibility, filtering through Migrate Mate saves significant time identifying host employers already familiar with the J-1 Trainee or Research Scholar process.
Does the J-1 home residency requirement affect MSL career planning?
It can. J-1 participants in certain fields, including medical and clinical sciences, may be subject to the two-year home-country physical presence requirement before switching to an H-1B visa, L-1 visa, or immigrant visa. You should confirm your requirement status before accepting an MSL host placement, since it directly affects how you can transition to long-term U.S. employment afterward.
What does the DS-7002 training plan need to include for an MSL role?
The DS-7002 must detail the specific professional activities you'll perform, including scientific exchange with healthcare providers, key opinion leader engagement, and medical education support tied to the host employer's therapeutic area. Vague descriptions that don't reflect the MSL function accurately can prompt the designated sponsor to request revisions before issuing the DS-2019.
