J-1 Visa New Grad Jobs
New Grad roles in the United States attract exchange visitors through the J-1 Intern and Trainee program categories, depending on whether you're currently enrolled or recently graduated. Securing J-1 sponsorship means a State Department-designated organization issues your DS-2019, while your U.S. host employer provides the training opportunity.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in New Grad
Confirm your program category before applying
Current students use the J-1 Intern category; graduates within 12 months of completing a degree typically qualify as Trainees. Applying under the wrong category can disqualify you before a host employer even reviews your credentials.
Document your degree field against the role
Your J-1 training plan must connect your academic background to the specific work you'll do. Collect transcripts, your diploma, and a letter from your institution confirming your field of study before any offer stage.
Search Migrate Mate to find J-1-aligned host employers
Not every employer is familiar with the J-1 host structure or willing to sign a training plan. Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. companies that have actively hosted exchange visitors in roles matching your background.
Ask host employers about their designated sponsor relationship
Employers don't issue DS-2019 forms themselves; they partner with a State Department-designated sponsor like CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT. Confirm which sponsor organization your prospective host works with before accepting an offer.
Check whether your home country triggers the two-year requirement
Some nationalities and government-funded exchange participants face a two-year home residency requirement after their J-1 ends. Verify your status with your designated sponsor before planning any post-program visa transitions in the U.S.
Review your training plan timeline against program limits
J-1 Intern programs cap at 12 months; Trainee programs allow up to 18 months. Build your offer negotiation around these hard limits so your training plan and DS-2019 end date align with your actual project timeline.

Find New Grad JobsNew Grad J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a New Grad role?
It depends on your enrollment status at the time of the placement. If you're still a student, the J-1 Intern category applies and covers practical training directly related to your field of study. If you've graduated within the past 12 months, the Trainee category is the correct fit, allowing structured on-the-job training in your degree area for up to 18 months.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa as a New Grad?
Your U.S. employer is the host, not the visa sponsor. J-1 sponsorship comes from a U.S. Department of State-designated sponsor organization, such as CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT, which issues your DS-2019 form and oversees program compliance. Your host employer signs the training plan and provides the placement, but the designated sponsor holds the legal sponsorship role and communicates directly with the State Department.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting J-1 New Grads?
Many employers are unfamiliar with the J-1 host structure or hesitant to sign a training plan without prior experience. Migrate Mate lets you search for U.S. roles and companies that have demonstrably supported exchange visitor placements, so you can focus your applications on employers already comfortable with the J-1 host process rather than starting that education from scratch.
Does the J-1 Trainee program have a cap or lottery?
No. Unlike the H-1B, the J-1 visa has no annual numerical cap and no lottery. Placements are available year-round and are limited only by the host employer's ability to provide a qualifying training plan and the designated sponsor's capacity to issue a DS-2019. New Grad applicants don't need to time their search around a registration window.
Can I transition to another visa status after my J-1 New Grad placement ends?
Possibly, but your options depend on whether the two-year home residency requirement applies to you. If it does, you generally can't change to H-1B or most immigrant visa categories from inside the U.S. until you've returned home for two years or obtained a waiver. Confirm your requirement status with your designated sponsor as soon as your DS-2019 is issued, not after your program ends.
