Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in Nursing Officer
Verify your nursing credentials transfer correctly
State nursing boards require foreign-educated nurses to pass NCLEX and often complete a CGFNS credential evaluation before a host employer can formalize a J-1 training plan. Confirm your credential status early so it doesn't stall your DS-2019 issuance.
Distinguish Trainee from Research Scholar placement
Trainee status fits nurses within five years of graduation or with work experience closely tied to their degree. Research Scholar status suits nurses conducting clinical research or curriculum development. Applying under the wrong category delays your DS-2019 and complicates host employer approval.
Search Migrate Mate to find J-1-aligned nursing roles
Use Migrate Mate to filter U.S. nursing positions by employers with documented exchange visitor hiring history. Targeting hosts with an active sponsorship track record cuts the time you spend screening employers who won't support a J-1 training plan.
Ask host employers about training plan specificity
J-1 Trainee and Trainee programs require a detailed Form DS-7002 outlining objectives, supervision, and evaluation intervals. Hospitals that have hosted J-1 nurses before will have templates ready. Those that haven't may not understand the DOL-backed documentation requirements.
Understand the two-year home residency requirement upfront
Many Nursing Officer exchange visitors from countries with critical skills shortages or U.S. government funding are subject to the two-year home residency rule before applying for H-1B or a green card. Confirm your waiver eligibility with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer.
Time your DS-2019 request around state license processing
Your designated sponsor can't finalize your DS-2019 until the host employer signs the training plan, but state nursing license processing can take six to twelve weeks. Start both tracks simultaneously so licensing delays don't push back your program start date.

Find Nursing Officer JobsNursing Officer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to Nursing Officer roles?
Most Nursing Officers enter under the J-1 Trainee category if they're within five years of completing their nursing degree or have work experience tied directly to their field of study. Nurses conducting clinical research or designing nursing education programs may qualify under the Research Scholar category instead. Your designated sponsor, not the host employer, determines which category fits your background based on DOL criteria.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa as a nurse?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT, that reviews your program, issues Form DS-2019, and monitors compliance throughout your exchange. The U.S. hospital or health network where you work is your host employer, not your sponsor. These are two separate roles, and confusing them is one of the most common mistakes nurses make when evaluating offers.
How can I find U.S. hospitals that have hosted J-1 nurses before?
Use Migrate Mate to search Nursing Officer roles filtered by employers with J-1 exchange visitor history. Targeting hosts that have already navigated the DS-7002 training plan and worked with a designated sponsor saves significant time compared to approaching hospitals that have no J-1 experience and may decline to support the process.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to nurses?
It depends on your nationality and funding source. Nurses from countries on the State Department's Exchange Visitor Skills List, or whose program is funded by a U.S. government agency, are typically subject to the two-year home residency requirement. This means you'd need to return home for two years, or obtain a waiver, before switching to H-1B status or applying for a green card. Confirm this with your designated sponsor before committing to a program.
What documentation does a host employer need to support my J-1 application?
The host employer must complete Form DS-7002, the Training and Internship Placement Plan, which details your supervision structure, clinical objectives, evaluation schedule, and how the program advances your nursing skills for use in your home country. USCIS and your designated sponsor both review this document. Employers unfamiliar with J-1 requirements often underestimate how detailed DS-7002 needs to be, so clarify their experience level during the offer stage.
