Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Power Apps Developer
Align your training plan to Power Platform competencies
Your DS-2019 training plan must itemize specific skill objectives, not just your job title. Document which Power Apps components, Power Automate flows, or Dataverse configurations you'll develop. Vague plans get flagged by designated sponsors during review.
Verify your field of study matches the role
J-1 Trainee eligibility requires your degree to align with your proposed training field. For Power Apps Developer positions, computer science, information systems, or software engineering credentials satisfy this requirement. Business degrees without a technology concentration may not qualify.
Target host employers with Microsoft solution partnerships
Host organizations that hold Microsoft Solutions Partner status are more familiar with structured training programs for Power Platform developers. Their existing documentation practices make the training plan validation step faster and less likely to generate sponsor questions.
Search for J-1-aligned Power Apps roles on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters U.S. employer listings by visa compatibility, letting you identify host organizations that have worked with J-1 exchange visitors. Run searches by role type and location before approaching any employer about training plan sponsorship.
Confirm the two-year home residency requirement applies to you
Some J-1 participants are subject to a two-year home country return requirement before changing to H-1B or permanent resident status. Government funding, skills-list countries, and certain exchange programs all trigger this condition. Check your DS-2019 and J-1 visa stamp before accepting an offer.
Request the host employer's I-983 equivalent before signing
Before your designated sponsor finalizes the DS-2019, the host employer must sign a training plan that USCIS-aligned sponsors review for adequacy. Ask for a draft of this agreement early so you can confirm your Power Apps responsibilities are accurately scoped and not misclassified as general IT support.

Find Power Apps Developer JobsPower Apps Developer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Power Apps Developer role?
Most Power Apps Developer positions fall under the J-1 Trainee category if you've completed your degree and have less than one year of post-graduation experience, or the Intern category if you're currently enrolled in a degree program. The Trainee category allows up to 18 months of authorized training in the information technology field, which covers Power Platform development work directly.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa, the employer or a separate organization?
Your visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your employer. The designated sponsor, such as Cultural Vistas or CIEE, issues your DS-2019 form, reviews your training plan, and is legally responsible for monitoring your exchange program. Your Power Apps host employer directs your daily work but holds a separate role as the host organization, not the visa sponsor.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting a J-1 Power Apps Developer?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Power Apps Developer roles filtered by visa compatibility. Not every employer advertising a Power Apps position understands J-1 host obligations, so targeting companies that have worked with exchange visitors before shortens the negotiation process. Approach employers with a clear explanation of the host organization requirements before the offer stage.
Can I convert my J-1 status to H-1B after my Power Apps training program ends?
Conversion from J-1 to H-1B is possible, but you must first determine whether your J-1 carries the two-year home residency requirement. If it does, you must either return home for two years or obtain a waiver before switching to H-1B status. Power Apps roles funded by your home government or tied to a skills-list country are especially likely to carry this condition.
What does the training plan need to include for a Power Apps Developer position?
The training plan your designated sponsor reviews must specify measurable objectives tied to Power Platform skills, not just a general role description. Acceptable detail includes which Power Apps features you'll work on, Power Automate integration tasks, Dataverse schema work, and any ALM or DevOps pipeline involvement. Plans that list only a job title without phase-by-phase skill milestones are routinely rejected by sponsors during DS-2019 processing.
