Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Registered Nurse Case Manager
Verify your credentials meet U.S. licensing standards
Before pursuing host employers, confirm your nursing credentials are evaluated through CGFNS and that your NCLEX-RN status is clear. Many states require licensure before a host employer can submit a training plan to your designated sponsor.
Target health systems with established exchange programs
Case management roles at large hospital networks and integrated health systems are far more likely to have existing relationships with designated J-1 visa sponsors. Search for roles at organizations already running graduate medical education or allied health training programs.
Use Migrate Mate to find J-1-aligned case manager openings
Filter Registered Nurse Case Manager postings on Migrate Mate to surface U.S. employers whose hiring history and role structure align with J-1 exchange program requirements, saving you from applying to hosts unlikely to work with a designated sponsor.
Request a written training plan before accepting any offer
Your designated sponsor requires a detailed Training or Exchange Visitor Training Plan before issuing your DS-2019. Confirm your prospective host employer is prepared to document your case management objectives, supervision structure, and program duration in writing.
Assess whether the two-year home residency requirement applies
Specialist and Trainee J-1 participants funded by their home government or placed in shortage-area roles may face the two-year home residency requirement under INA section 212(e). Clarify your eligibility for a waiver before committing to a long-term U.S. career plan.
Confirm your host employer understands the DS-2019 process
Many healthcare employers conflate J-1 sponsorship with H-1B visa employer sponsorship. Your host does not petition USCIS; they coordinate with your designated sponsor organization, which issues the DS-2019. Clarifying this distinction early prevents delays in your program start date.
Registered Nurse Case Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Registered Nurse Case Manager role?
Most internationally trained nurses pursuing case management positions in the United States qualify under the Trainee or Specialist category. The Trainee category suits nurses with a degree and at least one year of post-degree experience who are developing structured clinical skills. The Specialist category applies to professionals with recognized expertise seeking to share or refine advanced case management competencies with a U.S. host employer.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa if the hospital is my host employer?
A U.S. Department of State-designated sponsor organization, not your hospital, issues your DS-2019 form and holds legal responsibility for your exchange program. Organizations such as CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or IIE serve this role for allied health and nursing professionals. Your host employer coordinates with the designated sponsor on your training plan and program compliance but does not petition any government agency on your behalf.
How do I find Registered Nurse Case Manager positions that work with J-1 sponsorship?
Most standard job boards don't filter for J-1 program compatibility, so you'll often apply to host employers who have no existing relationship with a designated sponsor. Migrate Mate lets you search Registered Nurse Case Manager roles specifically aligned with J-1 exchange program structures, helping you identify U.S. health systems whose hiring practices and role design support this visa pathway from the outset.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect case management nurses?
It can. If your J-1 program is funded by your home government, if your home country lists your occupation as a skills shortage area, or if your role is in a U.S. medically underserved area, you may be subject to the two-year home residency requirement under INA section 212(e). This requires you to return home for two years before changing to most other U.S. visa categories. Review your DS-2019 and consult an immigration attorney if you plan to stay long-term.
What documentation does my host employer need to support my J-1 application?
Your host employer must work with your designated sponsor to complete a formal Training Plan or Exchange Visitor Training Plan that outlines your case management objectives, the clinical settings you'll rotate through, your supervisor's qualifications, and the program's start and end dates. They'll also provide an offer letter confirming compensation and duties. Without this documentation, your designated sponsor cannot issue the DS-2019, and your J-1 visa application cannot proceed.
