Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a SAP ABAP Consultant
Align your ABAP experience to training objectives
J-1 Trainee and Specialist programs require a formal training plan tied to your field. Document your ABAP module experience by functional area, such as SD, MM, or FI, so the designated sponsor can map your background to a compliant eight-week minimum program structure.
Verify your home residency requirement early
ABAP Consultant roles sponsored under the Specialist category can trigger the two-year home residency requirement if your government or employer funded your exchange. Confirm your status before accepting an offer, since this affects your ability to change to H-1B or green card status later.
Target SAP-active host employers with training infrastructure
Host companies must provide a structured learning environment, not just project work. Focus your search on mid-to-large enterprises running active SAP S/4HANA implementations, where dedicated ABAP teams and internal training programs already exist and can satisfy the designated sponsor's oversight requirements.
Use Migrate Mate to find J-1-aligned ABAP roles
Search Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers actively hosting international SAP professionals. Filtering by role and visa compatibility surfaces host companies whose hiring patterns align with structured J-1 training placements for ABAP Consultants, saving significant research time.
Negotiate the DS-2019 timeline into your offer conversation
Once your host employer confirms the placement, the designated sponsor must issue the DS-2019 before you can schedule your consular appointment. Build at least six to eight weeks of processing buffer into your start-date discussion so neither side is caught short before your program begin date.
Cross-reference your offered role against O*NET ABAP classifications
Designated sponsors validate that your job duties match your stated occupational category. Pull the O*NET profile for your specific SAP ABAP role and confirm your training plan references the same core task descriptors, reducing the risk of a sponsor requesting revisions before issuing your DS-2019.

Find SAP ABAP Consultant JobsSAP ABAP Consultant J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to SAP ABAP Consultant roles?
Most SAP ABAP Consultants qualify under the J-1 Trainee category if they hold a degree and have under one year of post-graduation experience, or the Specialist category if they bring substantial professional expertise in a specialized field. Current students on an internship track may qualify under the Intern category instead. The designated sponsor determines which category fits based on your credentials and the host employer's training plan.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa for an ABAP Consultant position?
Your J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your employer. Entities such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT issue the DS-2019 form, review your training plan, and monitor your compliance throughout the program. Your host employer is the company where you work and train. Conflating the two is one of the most common misunderstandings applicants have before starting the process.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect SAP ABAP Consultants?
It can. If your J-1 exchange is funded by your home country government or a U.S. government program, or if your home country appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, the two-year requirement applies. This means you must return home for two years before switching to H-1B or permanent resident status unless you obtain a waiver. Clarify this with your designated sponsor before signing any offer.
How do I find U.S. employers willing to host a J-1 ABAP Consultant?
Use Migrate Mate to search for SAP and ERP-focused U.S. employers whose hiring history aligns with international professional placements. Not every company running SAP has the internal structure to satisfy a designated sponsor's training plan requirements, so targeting organizations with established ABAP teams and documented onboarding programs improves your chances of a compliant placement.
Can I work on live SAP client projects during my J-1 Trainee or Specialist program?
Yes, but your activities must remain tied to your approved training plan objectives. The J-1 program is not a standard employment arrangement, so your host employer cannot simply assign you to billable client projects without linking those tasks to documented learning outcomes. The designated sponsor reviews your training plan and can flag placements where project work displaces the structured training component required for compliance.
