Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in Care Navigator
Align your credentials with Trainee requirements
The J-1 Trainee category requires a degree or professional certificate in your field plus at least one year of related experience, or five years of experience without a degree. Document both your health sciences or social services training and any case management or care coordination work before approaching host employers.
Target host employers with active training programs
Hospitals, managed care organizations, and nonprofit health systems are the most common Care Navigator host employers. Prioritize organizations with existing structured training programs, since the designated sponsor will require a detailed Training Plan signed by the host before issuing your DS-2019.
Search roles built around J-1 sponsorship on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to find Care Navigator openings at U.S. employers already familiar with J-1 exchange visitor placements. Filtering by sponsorship type saves significant time compared to cold-contacting employers who have no prior experience with designated sponsor workflows.
Clarify the two-year home residency rule early
Care Navigator roles that involve government-funded health programs or skills on the Exchange Visitor Skills List may trigger the two-year home residency requirement after your J-1 ends. Confirm with your designated sponsor whether your specific background and home country create this obligation before signing a host employer agreement.
Get the Training Plan right before DS-2019 issuance
Your host employer must complete a detailed Training Plan specifying weekly activities, supervision structure, and learning objectives tied to care navigation competencies. Gaps or vague descriptions are the most common reason designated sponsors like Cultural Vistas or CIEE delay DS-2019 issuance, so request an early draft review.
Confirm your host employer's willingness before sponsor outreach
The designated sponsor assesses both you and your host employer, not just your individual qualifications. Secure a written letter of intent or conditional offer from the host organization before approaching a sponsor, since sponsors require employer commitment as part of their program application review.

Find Care Navigator JobsCare Navigator J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Care Navigator role?
Most Care Navigator placements fall under the J-1 Trainee category if you have a relevant degree plus at least one year of professional experience, or five or more years of work experience in lieu of a degree. The Specialist category applies if you are a recognized expert in a narrow care coordination subspecialty. Students still completing a degree may qualify under the Intern category instead.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a Care Navigator position?
The J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas, CIEE, or IIE, not the hiring employer. The healthcare organization or health system where you work is the host employer. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019 form, monitors your training plan compliance, and serves as your official program administrator throughout the exchange.
How do I find U.S. employers willing to host a J-1 Care Navigator?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Care Navigator roles at organizations already open to J-1 exchange visitor arrangements. Outside of that, target large hospital networks, integrated health systems, and nonprofit managed care organizations, since these employers are most likely to have existing relationships with designated sponsors and the administrative capacity to complete a Training Plan.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to Care Navigator J-1 holders?
It depends on your home country and funding source. If your exchange is government-funded, your home country appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List for health-related occupations, or your training was financed by a U.S. government agency, you will likely be subject to the two-year requirement. Your designated sponsor can confirm your specific situation before your DS-2019 is issued.
What does the Training Plan need to cover for a Care Navigator placement?
The Training Plan must outline specific weekly learning activities tied to care navigation competencies, the supervision structure, evaluation methods, and the skills you will gain that are not available in your home country. Designated sponsors will reject vague plans that list only job duties. Your host employer's HR or compliance team typically drafts this with guidance from the sponsor organization.
