This Senior Engineer role is focused on PLS‑CADD‑based transmission and distribution line design. Candidates may come from a variety of engineering backgrounds commonly associated with power delivery, with expertise centered on line modeling, structure analysis, and constructible design. You’ll guide projects from concept through construction, mentor engineers and designers, and work directly with clients to deliver high-quality, defensible solutions.
Primary Responsibilities
- Lead the engineering and design of transmission and distribution line projects, with a strong emphasis on PLS‑CADD modeling and analysis.
- Develop and review transmission line layouts, structure loading, sag-tension calculations, and clearance analyses.
- Serve as a technical resource and mentor for engineers and designers, providing guidance, QA/QC, and design oversight.
- Coordinate with internal disciplines (substation, civil, environmental, right-of-way) to deliver integrated solutions.
- Interface directly with clients, utilities, and project stakeholders to define scope, schedule, and technical approach.
- Review and stamp engineering deliverables as appropriate.
- Participate in field visits, constructability reviews, and support during construction as needed.
- Contribute to process improvement, standards development, and best practices within the Transmission & Distribution group.
Qualifications
You are passionate about:
- Working collaboratively with others.
- Having ownership in the work you do.
- Using your talents to positively affect communities.
You Bring To The Team
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to contribute and work well with a team.
- Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, civil engineering, or related field.
- 8+ years of progressive experience in transmission and/or distribution line engineering.
- Advanced proficiency in PLS CADD; experience with PLS POLE and PLS TOWER is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience leading projects and performing detailed engineering calculations.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Experience working with utility clients and applicable industry standards.
Additional Information

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Senior Simulation Engineer
Align your credentials to specialty occupation standards
Gather transcripts, professional certifications, and portfolio evidence showing advanced simulation work - finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, or physics-based modeling. Designated sponsors review these when assessing whether your background qualifies for the Trainee or Research Scholar category.
Distinguish Trainee from Research Scholar before applying
If you hold a degree and fewer than five years of post-graduate simulation experience, the Trainee category fits. Research Scholar applies when your role centers on academic or institutional research. Misidentifying your category early delays the DS-2019 issuance process significantly.
Target host employers with existing simulation infrastructure
Aerospace, defense, automotive, and energy companies running active modeling programs are most likely to take on J-1 Trainees. Search Migrate Mate to filter Senior Simulation Engineer roles by employers already familiar with J-1 hosting requirements and training plan obligations.
Draft a training plan before your first employer conversation
J-1 Trainee placements require a formal training plan detailing learning objectives, supervision structure, and evaluation schedules. Having a working draft ready signals to prospective host employers that you understand the program and reduces friction when they consult their designated sponsor.
Confirm the host employer will sign the DS-7002
The DS-7002 Training or Internship Placement Plan must be co-signed by the host employer and the designated sponsor before your DS-2019 is issued. Secure that written commitment before accepting an offer - some employers decline this administrative step after the fact.
Check whether your country triggers the two-year home residency requirement
If your J-1 sponsorship is government-funded or your home country appears on the State Department's Exchange Visitor Skills List, a two-year home residency requirement may apply before you can change to H-1B or permanent resident status. USCIS adjudicates waivers, and the process takes planning.

Find Senior Simulation Engineer JobsSenior Simulation Engineer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to Senior Simulation Engineers?
Most Senior Simulation Engineers enter through the Trainee category if they have a relevant degree and fewer than five years of post-graduation experience in simulation, modeling, or computational engineering. Those embedded in university or government laboratory research environments may qualify under the Research Scholar category instead. Your designated sponsor - not the host employer - makes the final category determination based on your background and the proposed program.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a simulation engineering role?
The J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, not the engineering firm or laboratory hosting you. The host employer provides the work environment and signs the training plan, but the designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, monitors program compliance, and remains your primary point of contact with the State Department throughout your exchange.
How do I find U.S. employers willing to host a J-1 Trainee in simulation engineering?
Use Migrate Mate to search Senior Simulation Engineer roles filtered for J-1 compatibility. Aerospace, automotive, and defense contractors with established simulation teams are the most active host categories. Because hosting a J-1 Trainee requires a signed training plan and sponsor coordination, targeting employers already familiar with the program structure saves significant back-and-forth during offer negotiations.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect simulation engineers on J-1 visas?
It can. If your J-1 program is funded by your home government, or if your home country lists simulation or engineering disciplines on the State Department's Exchange Visitor Skills List, you may be subject to a two-year home residency requirement after your exchange ends. This bars you from changing to H-1B or applying for permanent residence until you return home for two years or obtain a USCIS-approved waiver.
What documentation does a host employer need to hire a J-1 Senior Simulation Engineer?
The host employer must co-sign the DS-7002 Training or Internship Placement Plan alongside the designated sponsor, document your supervision and evaluation schedule, and demonstrate that the role provides structured skill development rather than standard employment. Some employers also need to complete E-Verify enrollment before the designated sponsor will finalize your DS-2019. Preparing these materials before the offer stage prevents last-minute delays.
