Align your CV to specialty occupation standards
J-1 visa Trainee and Specialist programs require documented expertise in a specific occupational field. Frame your CV around Dynamics 365 modules, ERP lifecycle phases, and functional consulting deliverables so your host employer can justify the training plan.
Verify your J-1 category before approaching employers
If you hold a degree and have under one year of post-graduation experience, the Trainee category applies. Beyond that threshold, you likely qualify as a Specialist. Misidentifying your category early causes designated sponsors to reject your DS-2019 application.
Target host employers with active Dynamics implementations
Consulting firms managing mid-market or enterprise Dynamics 365 migrations are more likely to structure a formal exchange program around your role. Focus your search on employers with multi-module deployments in finance, supply chain, or field service.
Search for J-1 compatible roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter U.S. Microsoft Dynamics Consultant positions from employers familiar with hosting exchange visitors. Narrowing by role function saves time compared to screening general job boards for sponsorship-compatible opportunities.
Confirm the host employer will sign a Training Plan
Before accepting any offer, ask the employer whether they'll complete a DS-7002 Training Plan with a designated sponsor. Without a signed Training Plan, no sponsor organization can issue your DS-2019, and the J-1 process cannot proceed.
Check for the two-year home residency requirement early
Some J-1 participants funded by their home government or whose home country appears on the DOL skills list must return home for two years before switching to H-1B visa or a green card pathway. Confirm your exposure before signing an offer.
Microsoft Dynamics Consultant J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Microsoft Dynamics Consultant role?
The Trainee category applies if you have a relevant degree and fewer than 12 months of post-graduation professional experience. The Specialist category fits consultants with significant field expertise who are coming to the United States to share and develop specialized skills. The distinction matters because designated sponsors assess eligibility differently for each, and the DS-7002 Training Plan structure varies accordingly.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a consulting role?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or CIEE, not your employer. The hiring firm acts as the host organization. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, monitors program compliance, and must approve your Training Plan. Your employer hosts and supervises the exchange activity but does not hold the sponsoring designation itself.
How do I find U.S. employers willing to host a J-1 exchange visitor in a Dynamics consultant role?
Migrate Mate lets you search U.S. Microsoft Dynamics Consultant positions from employers already familiar with hosting exchange visitors. Filtering by role function and industry narrows results to firms whose implementation work aligns with the structured training objectives that a designated sponsor will require in your DS-7002 Training Plan.
Can a J-1 Trainee work on a client-facing Dynamics 365 implementation project?
Yes, but the work must align with the approved Training Plan objectives tied to your occupational category. Client-facing project work is permitted when it serves a genuine training or knowledge-exchange purpose documented in the DS-7002. Designated sponsors review the scope of activities, so your host employer needs to frame implementation tasks as structured learning milestones rather than standard production consulting.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect Dynamics consultants on J-1 visas?
It can. If your home country appears on the DOL exchange visitor skills list, or if your program is funded by your home government or a U.S. government agency, the two-year residency requirement applies. This means you cannot change to H-1B or most immigrant visa categories without first returning home or obtaining a waiver. Check your J-1 visa stamp and DS-2019 for the 212(e) notation before planning any long-term U.S. career path.
