Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Sourcing Specialist
Match your CV to U.S. procurement terminology
Sourcing Specialist postings in the U.S. use terms like RFQ management, supplier scorecards, and category strategy. Translate your experience into that language before applying so hiring managers recognize the direct fit.
Confirm the host employer qualifies under your category
The J-1 Trainee category requires at least one year of post-degree work experience or a degree plus related experience. Verify your host employer's training plan reflects hands-on sourcing duties, not administrative tasks that fall outside the category's scope.
Search for roles using Migrate Mate
Filter by supply chain and procurement functions on Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers whose hiring patterns align with J-1 exchange visitors. Narrowing by industry helps you target sectors where Trainee and Specialist placements are most common.
Prepare a detailed training plan before the offer stage
Your designated sponsor issues the DS-2019 only after reviewing a structured training plan. Draft it early with your prospective host, outlining sourcing rotations, skill benchmarks, and supervisory contacts. Vague plans slow DS-2019 issuance significantly.
Check whether your role carries the home residency requirement
Some J-1 Trainee and Specialist placements trigger a two-year home-country residency requirement based on funding source or skills list. Confirm your situation with your designated sponsor before signing an offer, since a waiver process takes additional time.
Benchmark your offered salary against OFLC Wage Search
Your host employer must offer compensation consistent with U.S. market rates for comparable sourcing roles. Run the OFLC Wage Search using the relevant SOC code for purchasing and supply chain specialists to verify the offered rate is defensible.

Find Sourcing Specialist JobsSourcing Specialist J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Sourcing Specialist role?
Most Sourcing Specialist placements fall under the J-1 Trainee category, which covers professionals with a degree plus at least one year of related experience, or those with five or more years of field experience. If you hold a senior specialist credential recognized by a professional body, the Specialist category may apply. Your designated sponsor, not your host employer, makes the final category determination when issuing your DS-2019.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a sourcing role?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, not the hiring company. The hiring company is your host employer. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, approves your training plan, monitors your program compliance, and serves as your primary point of contact for visa administration throughout the placement.
How do I find host employers open to J-1 sourcing placements?
Use Migrate Mate to search procurement and supply chain roles at U.S. employers whose hiring patterns are compatible with J-1 exchange visitors. Focus on mid-size manufacturers, retail merchandising teams, and technology hardware companies, which regularly host Trainee-category professionals in sourcing functions and have existing relationships with designated sponsors.
What does the training plan need to cover for a Sourcing Specialist position?
Your designated sponsor requires a formal training plan before issuing the DS-2019. For sourcing roles, it should outline specific activities like supplier qualification, RFQ execution, contract negotiation support, and spend analysis, broken into phases with measurable benchmarks. Generic plans citing only job duties rather than skill development milestones are frequently returned for revision, which delays your start date.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to sourcing professionals?
It can. The two-year home-country physical presence requirement applies if your J-1 program is funded by your home government or a U.S. government agency, or if your home country lists your occupation on the Exchange Visitor Skills List. Sourcing and procurement specialties appear on some national skills lists. Confirm your eligibility for a waiver before accepting a host employer offer if returning home for two years is not feasible.
