Who Are We?
We at Pine Rest believe in the power of healing and that everyone in our community has the right to expert care for mental health and substance use disorders. We are much more than just the third largest non-profit behavioral health system in the country, our 220-acre main campus, and our network of clinical sites across Michigan. We are a tight-knit community of healers who witness the impact of our life-changing work each day.
Each day, we are closing the gaps in access to care. We are innovating through leading-edge research, testing, programs, and treatment modalities that others replicate across the country. Our services include a state-of-the-art psychiatric urgent care center and a soon-to-be-built pediatric behavioral health center, outpatient, inpatient, partial hospitalization (day programs), assessment and testing, residential, addiction treatment and specialty services such as crisis response, employee assistance programs, forensic psychiatry and psychology, and neuromodulation. On-the-job educational programs for nurses, psychologists, advanced practice providers, psychiatrists, and chaplains are equipping the next generation of care providers.
We are passionate about serving and are honored to be a part of this incredible work.
What Will you Do?
As a Intern – CPE Chaplain (Partner Site) at Pine Rest, you’ll be part of a tight-knit team that believes in the healing power of your expertise and compassion. This is a temporary, supervised clinical role for individuals enrolled in a unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) through an ACPE-accredited program who are completing their field placement at a Pine Rest partner location. CPE Chaplain Interns provide spiritual and emotional support to patients, residents, families, and staff, consistent with Pine Rest’s mission and values. Working in collaboration with the partner site’s care team, interns deliver spiritual care interventions while developing their competencies in pastoral reflection, formation, and theological integration. Interns are expected to serve a broad and diverse population with compassion and professionalism.
This internship is hands-on and educational in nature and provides students the opportunity to learn and demonstrate their ability to offer spiritual care in behavioral health and medical settings under supervision. CPE Chaplain Interns at partner sites are mentored to develop their self-awareness, spiritual assessment skills, and capacity to provide interfaith and inclusive care while integrating feedback from both Pine Rest and partner site supervisors.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide compassionate spiritual care through presence, prayer, conversation, and reflective listening to individuals from a variety of faiths, cultures, and spiritual traditions.
- Complete spiritual assessments and offer appropriate spiritual interventions in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team and under supervision.
- Participate in individual and group supervision, didactics, verbatim reviews, and theological reflections as part of the CPE curriculum.
- Respect and support cultural, religious, and spiritual diversity, while upholding Pine Rest’s Christian mission and inclusive values.
- Assist in leading group spiritual care sessions or services tailored to the population being served.
- Participate in Sunday worship services or holiday observances when appropriate and as assigned.
- Document individual and group spiritual care visits in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) according to department guidelines.
- Support staff well-being through presence and attentive listening, with guidance from a certified chaplain.
- Attend training in behavioral health and safety procedures relevant to the assigned units.
- May assist in planning and leading memorial services or other rituals as appropriate for the care environment.
- Performs other duties or functions as assigned.
What Does the Role Require?
Education/Experience:
- Currently enrolled in or accepted to an ACPE-accredited Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program.
- Bachelor’s degree required. Master of Divinity or equivalent theological education preferred or in progress.
- Endorsement or support from one’s religious or spiritual community.

Align your credentials to J-1 categories
Partner Executive roles typically fall under the J-1 Trainee or Specialist category. Review the program objectives for each before applying, as your degree field, years of experience, and training plan must match the category your designated sponsor approves.
Search roles on Migrate Mate first
Use Migrate Mate to filter Partner Executive openings by employers that have hosted J-1 exchange visitors before. Targeting host-experienced companies shortens the DS-2019 coordination timeline and reduces the back-and-forth with your designated sponsor.
Prepare a structured training plan early
Your designated sponsor requires a detailed training plan outlining specific skills, activities, and benchmarks tied to your Partner Executive role. Draft this document before your first employer interview so host companies see you understand the J-1 process requirements.
Identify whether the two-year home residency rule applies
The J-1 two-year home residency requirement applies to exchange visitors whose program is government-funded or whose home country designates the occupation as needed. Partner Executive professionals funded through certain programs must confirm this with their designated sponsor before filing.
Request the DS-2019 only after an offer is confirmed
Your designated sponsor issues the DS-2019 after the host employer signs the training plan and the program is approved. Initiating DS-2019 paperwork before a formal written offer wastes processing time and may trigger compliance issues with your sponsor organization.

Find Partner Executive JobsPartner Executive J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Partner Executive role?
Most Partner Executive candidates qualify under the J-1 Trainee category if they have a relevant degree and less than one year of post-graduation experience, or the Specialist category for professionals with substantial expertise in business development or partnership management. Your designated sponsor, not your host employer, determines which category applies based on your background and the training objectives you submit.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for this role?
The J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT. Your host employer, the company where you work as a Partner Executive, is not the legal sponsor. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, monitors compliance, and maintains program records throughout your exchange program.
How do I find Partner Executive host employers open to J-1 exchange visitors?
Migrate Mate lets you search Partner Executive roles and filter for employers with J-1 hosting history, which is the most direct way to identify companies already familiar with the DS-2019 process and designated sponsor requirements. Targeting experienced host employers significantly reduces the onboarding friction that comes with introducing a company to J-1 obligations for the first time.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect Partner Executive professionals?
It can. The requirement applies if your J-1 program is financed by your home government or the U.S. government, or if your home country lists your occupation as one it needs you to return to develop. Partner Executive roles in business development or strategic partnerships are not automatically exempt, so confirm your status with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer or making relocation plans.
Can a Partner Executive role transition from J-1 to another work visa afterward?
Yes, but the pathway depends on whether the two-year home residency requirement applies to you. Without that requirement, transitioning to an H-1B, O-1, or other employer-sponsored visa is possible after your J-1 exchange program ends. If the requirement does apply, you would need a waiver before changing status. Discuss this with your designated sponsor early so your post-program options are clear before you commit to the role.
