Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in Technology Business Partner
Align your background to Trainee program requirements
The J-1 Trainee category requires either a degree plus one year of relevant experience, or five years of work experience in your field. Document how your technology strategy or IT business alignment work meets this threshold before approaching host employers.
Build a training plan around structured IT governance rotations
Designated sponsors require a detailed training plan showing skill progression across distinct phases. For Technology Business Partner roles, map rotations across stakeholder management, enterprise architecture, and IT investment analysis to demonstrate structured learning rather than ongoing employment.
Search Migrate Mate to find host employers open to J-1 exchange visitors
Not every company understands the host employer model or knows how to engage a designated sponsor. Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers with a track record of working with J-1 exchange visitors in technology and business strategy functions.
Clarify the two-year home residency rule early
If your home country appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, or if your program receives U.S. government funding, you may face a two-year home residency requirement after your J-1 ends. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before accepting a host employer offer.
Verify prevailing wage compliance using OFLC Wage Search
Host employers hosting J-1 Trainees or Specialists must pay wages commensurate with U.S. workers in similar roles. Cross-check the offered compensation against OFLC Wage Search data for Technology Business Partner positions in the employer's metro area before your training plan is finalized.
Confirm your host employer will sign the DS-7002 training plan
The DS-7002 is a legally binding commitment from the host employer, not just a formality. Get written confirmation that a senior HR or legal contact will sign the training plan and coordinate with your designated sponsor organization before you accept any offer.

Find Technology Business Partner JobsTechnology Business Partner J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Technology Business Partner role?
The J-1 Trainee category fits most Technology Business Partner candidates who have a relevant degree plus at least one year of professional experience, or five or more years of field experience without a degree. The Specialist category applies if you have expertise in a field that is not widely available in the United States. Current university students completing a structured internship linked to their degree program may qualify under the Intern category instead.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa for this type of role?
Your J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not the company you work for. Organizations such as Cultural Vistas, AIPT, and IIE administer J-1 Trainee and Specialist programs, issue your DS-2019, and monitor your compliance with program regulations. The technology company hosting you is your host employer, not your visa sponsor, and both parties sign the DS-7002 training plan to formalize the arrangement.
How do I find technology companies that are willing to host J-1 exchange visitors?
Many U.S. companies are unfamiliar with the J-1 host employer model and have never engaged a designated sponsor. Use Migrate Mate to find employers in technology and business strategy functions that have previously worked with J-1 exchange visitors or show openness to the program. Targeting companies with existing international mobility experience shortens the education process and speeds up your DS-2019 timeline.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to Technology Business Partner positions?
It can. The two-year home residency requirement applies if your home country is on the Exchange Visitor Skills List for your occupational field, if your J-1 program receives U.S. government or home government funding, or if you are a national of certain countries subject to the requirement. You must return to your home country for two years before changing to most other U.S. visa categories. Your designated sponsor can confirm whether the requirement applies to your specific situation before you begin.
Can my host employer convert my J-1 status to an H-1B or other work visa later?
Yes, but only after satisfying any two-year home residency requirement, or obtaining a waiver through an approved channel such as a Interested Government Agency recommendation or a no-objection statement from your home country. Technology Business Partner roles typically qualify as specialty occupations under H-1B, so the conversion pathway exists in principle. Plan this transition with your host employer and a designated sponsor well before your J-1 program end date.
