Document your policy enforcement credentials early
Trust and Safety roles often require demonstrated experience with content moderation, risk analysis, or online harm mitigation. Compile case studies, certificates, and performance reviews that show measurable outcomes before approaching any host employer.
Identify host employers with existing J-1 infrastructure
Target tech companies and digital platforms that have previously hosted J-1 Trainees in policy or operations functions. Employers already familiar with the DS-2019 process and training plan requirements move faster and ask fewer compliance questions.
Search J-1-aligned Trust and Safety roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter U.S. employers hiring in Trust and Safety who align with J-1 exchange visitor pathways. The platform surfaces roles where host employers have relevant sponsorship-compatible structures already in place.
Align your training plan to a recognized occupational category
Your designated sponsor will require a training plan mapped to a specific occupation. Review the O*NET profile for Compliance Officers or Information Security Analysts to identify the skill categories and task language that support a credible, approvable training plan.
Clarify the two-year home residency rule before accepting an offer
Some J-1 Trainees are subject to a two-year home-country residency requirement depending on funding source and nationality. Confirm with your designated sponsor whether you carry this requirement before finalizing your host employer agreement.
Confirm your sponsor's training plan approval timeline with your employer
Designated sponsors such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT must review and approve your training plan before issuing the DS-2019. Build at least four to six weeks into your start date negotiations to accommodate this review and any employer revisions.

Find Trust And Safety JobsTrust And Safety J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits Trust and Safety roles?
Most Trust and Safety professionals enter through the Trainee category, which is designed for individuals with at least one year of prior experience or a relevant degree plus six months of experience. Current university students completing a degree program may qualify under the Intern category instead, provided the role relates directly to their field of study.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa for a Trust and Safety position?
Your visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your employer. The hiring company is your host employer. The designated sponsor, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, issues your DS-2019, approves your training plan, and monitors your program compliance. Your employer cannot sponsor a J-1 directly.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting J-1 exchange visitors in Trust and Safety?
Migrate Mate is built specifically to surface U.S. employers and open roles that align with exchange visitor sponsorship pathways. Because Trust and Safety is a relatively specialized function, filtering by role type and employer profile on Migrate Mate helps you prioritize companies where J-1 hosting is a realistic conversation rather than an unfamiliar concept.
Does a Trust and Safety role qualify as a specialty occupation for J-1 purposes?
The J-1 Trainee and Intern categories do not require specialty occupation status the way H-1B does. What matters is that your training plan reflects a structured, progressive program tied to a recognized occupational field. Trust and Safety roles in policy analysis, risk operations, or content integrity map credibly to compliance and information security occupational categories that designated sponsors regularly approve.
Can I extend my J-1 status if my Trust and Safety training program continues?
J-1 Trainees may receive programs up to 18 months, with a possible extension of up to six months for hospitality-focused programs, though most Trust and Safety placements fall under the standard cap. Extensions require your designated sponsor to amend your DS-2019 before your current program end date. Confirm extension eligibility with your sponsor well before that deadline, as it is not automatic.
