Laboratory Animal Caretaker Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a laboratory animal caretaker in Texas?
Texas does not require a state-issued license to work as a laboratory animal caretaker, but most employers expect or strongly prefer certification through the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, known as AALAS. The entry-level credential is the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician, or ALAT, which requires passing a written exam. Candidates typically start with a high school diploma, gain hands-on vivarium experience, and then sit for AALAS certification to advance.
How much do laboratory animal caretakers make in Texas?
Laboratory animal caretakers in Texas earn a median of about $34,850 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $24,070 for the lowest 10% to over $46,890 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire laboratory animal caretakers in Texas?
Employers hiring laboratory animal caretakers in Texas right now include Texas Biomedical Research Institute, Texas A&M University, and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of major academic medical centers and contract research organizations means openings appear regularly at institutions anchored in the Houston Medical Center, San Antonio, and the Dallas-Fort Worth research corridor.
Which Texas cities have the most laboratory animal caretaker jobs?
San Antonio, Beeville, and College Station have the most laboratory animal caretaker openings in Texas. Houston leads because of the Texas Medical Center, one of the largest medical research complexes in the world, while San Antonio's strong military medical research presence and Dallas-Fort Worth's growing pharmaceutical and biotech sector keep demand steady across all three metros.
Are there remote laboratory animal caretaker jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Laboratory animal caretaker work is almost entirely hands-on, requiring daily physical presence in a vivarium or animal facility, so the vast majority of roles are on-site by nature. About 0% of laboratory animal caretaker openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions are typically limited to administrative, compliance, or training coordination functions within larger research operations.
How can I get hired as a laboratory animal caretaker in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for an animal care assistant or vivarium aide opening at a Texas academic medical center or university research facility, where on-the-job training is standard. Institutions such as UT Southwestern, Texas A&M Health Science Center, and the UT System campuses routinely hire entry-level candidates and provide structured AALAS exam preparation. Candidates who hold even a basic animal handling certificate or have volunteered with a veterinary clinic or animal shelter gain a measurable edge over applicants with no animal contact experience.
Where can I find and apply to laboratory animal caretaker jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to laboratory animal caretaker jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings updated regularly. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
