Chemist Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a chemist in Texas?
Texas does not require a state-issued license to work as a chemist, so the path begins with earning at least a bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related field from an accredited program. Many Texas employers, particularly in petrochemical and environmental sectors, also look for American Chemical Society certification as a mark of professional standing. Gaining hands-on lab experience through university internships or co-ops with Texas industry partners significantly strengthens early-career applications.
How much do chemists make in Texas?
Chemists in Texas earn a median of about $99,640 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $58,850 for the lowest 10% to over $170,250 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire chemists in Texas?
Employers hiring chemists in Texas right now include SGS, Veolia, and IDEA Public Schools, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of refining, specialty chemical manufacturing, and environmental testing firms means the employer base is broad and hires chemists at multiple seniority levels year-round.
Which Texas cities have the most chemist jobs?
San Antonio, Austin, and Dallas account for the greatest concentration of chemist openings in Texas. Houston leads because of the Gulf Coast's extensive petrochemical and refining corridor, while Dallas-Fort Worth supports pharmaceutical, environmental consulting, and materials science employers, and San Antonio draws demand from biotechnology and military research institutions at and around Joint Base San Antonio.
Are there remote chemist jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Most chemistry roles require on-site lab access, so remote work is limited compared to desk-based fields. About 2% of chemist openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with the majority of those positions concentrated in regulatory affairs, scientific writing, and data analysis functions that don't require physical lab presence.
How can I get hired as a chemist in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for laboratory technician or quality control analyst roles, which large Texas petrochemical and environmental testing employers regularly fill with recent graduates. Companies such as TCEQ-regulated environmental labs and Gulf Coast refineries run structured new-graduate programs and internship pipelines. Earning an American Chemical Society certification and completing a university co-op with a Texas industry partner gives candidates a clear edge over those without applied lab hours.
Where can I find and apply to chemist jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to chemist jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from Texas employers across the petrochemical, pharmaceutical, environmental, and materials science sectors. Find the roles that fit your background and apply directly to the employers posting them.
