Geophysicist Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a geophysicist in Texas?
Becoming a geophysicist in Texas typically starts with a bachelor's degree in geophysics or geology, with many roles in oil and gas or research requiring a master's or doctorate. Texas does not issue a state license specific to geophysicists, but professionals who provide geoscience services to the public may need registration through the Texas Board of Professional Geoscientists. Gaining experience through internships with Texas energy companies or academic research programs strengthens candidacy significantly.
How much do geophysicists make in Texas?
Geophysicists in Texas earn a median of about $145,220 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $60,100 for the lowest 10% to over $287,180 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire geophysicists in Texas?
Employers hiring geophysicists in Texas right now include SLB, Fugro, and Viridien, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Texas's concentration of major integrated oil companies, independent exploration firms, and oilfield services companies makes it one of the deepest markets for geoscience talent in the world.
Which Texas cities have the most geophysicist jobs?
Houston and Lubbock lead for geophysicist openings in Texas. Houston dominates because it is home to the global headquarters or major technical centers of the world's largest energy companies, while Midland-Odessa reflects the intense exploration and production activity in the Permian Basin, and Dallas draws roles from independent producers, consulting firms, and corporate geoscience groups.
Are there remote geophysicist jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely analytical fields, since geophysicist work often involves fieldwork, core lab access, or close collaboration with drilling teams. About 67% of geophysicist openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with remote arrangements most prevalent in data interpretation, seismic processing, and reservoir modeling roles that rely on software rather than on-site equipment.
How can I get hired as a geophysicist in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to internship or new-graduate programs at major Texas energy companies, which routinely recruit geoscience graduates for rotational or entry-level subsurface roles. ExxonMobil, Chevron, and large oilfield services firms run structured development programs out of Houston that accept candidates without industry experience. A strong foundation in seismic software, coursework in petroleum geology, or a research project tied to Texas basins like the Permian or Eagle Ford gives early-career candidates a concrete edge.
Where can I find and apply to geophysicist jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to geophysicist jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings across Houston, Midland, Dallas, and other markets. Find the roles that fit your experience and specialty and apply directly from each listing.
