INTRODUCTION
At Houston Methodist, the Research Assistant I position is responsible for providing technical research support in performing research experiments. Work could be performed in either a laboratory or office environment. Under direct supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), the Research Assistant I assists in the organization, tabulation and analysis of data. This position maintains records of data collected.
The Antibody Discovery and Accelerated Protein Therapeutics (ADAPT) lab is looking for a Research Assistant I to contribute to research discovering and developing therapeutics for infectious diseases. Our lab uses proteomics, artificial intelligence/machine learning-enabled protein engineering, and directed evolution to fuel the discovery and development of vaccine antigens, protective antibodies, and other protein therapeutic platforms.
This position is ideal for someone who is excited about synthetic biology research, with a desire to learn more and contribute to the field. The role will be focused on using high-throughput genetic engineering, laboratory automation, and next-generation sequencing to contribute to the overarching lab goals of developing improved protein therapeutics. You will work in a highly collaborative team to learn, apply, and develop techniques for the creation of large numbers of gene variants and massive mutation libraries. As part of the position, expect to receive training and experience in cutting-edge synthetic biology techniques and learn about the research being pursued in the ADAPT lab through regular group meetings and internal seminars.
While this is primarily a wet-lab position, it involves a significant computational component to manage the scale of samples that will be handled and to interface with automated systems. Experience with molecular biology techniques (e.g. PCR, gene cloning, sequencing) is a plus, as is proficiency with bioinformatics, scripting languages, and/or lab automation.

Research Assistant Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a research assistant in Texas?
Most research assistant positions in Texas require at least a bachelor's degree in a field related to the research area, such as biology, psychology, public health, or a social science. Clinical research assistants working on regulated trials typically pursue certification through the Association of Clinical Research Professionals, which is widely recognized by Texas academic medical centers and pharmaceutical employers. Gaining hands-on experience through university lab work, internships, or volunteer research projects at Texas institutions is the most direct path to a first position.
Which companies hire research assistants in Texas?
Employers hiring research assistants in Texas right now include Texas A&M University, UTHealth Houston, and Houston Methodist, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of major academic medical centers, research universities, and life sciences companies means hiring activity is spread across institutional, pharmaceutical, and government-funded research settings.
Which Texas cities have the most research assistant jobs?
Houston, College Station, and El Paso have the most research assistant openings in Texas. Houston leads because of its dense cluster of medical research institutions and energy-sector research operations, while Austin's growing biotech and university presence drives demand there, and Dallas supports a broad mix of clinical, social science, and corporate research roles across its large healthcare and financial services sectors.
Are there remote research assistant jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields, since many research assistant roles require on-site lab work, patient contact, or equipment access. About 4% of research assistant openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to be in literature review, data analysis, survey research, and qualitative coding rather than hands-on laboratory or clinical work.
How can I get hired as a research assistant in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for undergraduate or post-baccalaureate research assistant positions at Texas universities, which routinely hire candidates with no prior professional research experience. Large institutions like UT Austin, Texas A&M, and UT Southwestern Medical Center run formal research training programs and post openings for entry-level positions in their labs and clinical trial units. Moving laterally from roles such as medical scribe, lab technician, or data entry specialist is also effective, and completing a relevant certification such as the Clinical Research Associate credential gives candidates a measurable edge.
Where can I find and apply to research assistant jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to research assistant jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings across academic, clinical, and industry research settings. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly to the employers posting them.
