INTRODUCTION

The Translational Molecular Pathology (TMP) department at MD Anderson Cancer Center is at the forefront of translational cancer research, bridging laboratory discoveries with clinical applications to improve patient outcomes. Researchers within TMP investigate the molecular mechanisms of cancer, evaluate novel therapeutic approaches, and develop innovative technologies that advance precision medicine. This Research Assistant II position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge translational research focused on innate immune signaling and the cellular response to DNA damage during cancer chemotherapy. The role is ideal for an independent, scientifically curious individual who enjoys designing experiments, learning new laboratory techniques, and collaborating on multidisciplinary research projects that have the potential to improve cancer care.

In this role, you will help design and perform research experiments while working closely with the Principal Investigator to develop detailed experimental plans and procedures. You will manage multiple research projects simultaneously, independently carry out laboratory studies, compile research findings, and contribute data for scientific publications, grant applications, and research protocols.

You will also provide technical and operational support for laboratory research activities by coordinating experimental procedures, assembling and operating laboratory equipment, and researching emerging scientific techniques to support projects investigating innate immune signaling pathways during DNA-damaging chemotherapy. This position offers the opportunity to work with advanced laboratory methodologies while contributing to innovative translational cancer research.

Collaboration is a key component of this role. You will participate in research studies with investigators both within and outside MD Anderson, train research personnel and students on established laboratory techniques, present research findings at laboratory meetings and scientific conferences, and assist with implementing new technologies and experimental approaches. Strong communication skills and a willingness to continuously learn are essential to success.

You will also play an important role in scientific data management and research documentation, maintaining accurate laboratory notebooks and databases, documenting quality control activities, preparing graphs, figures, presentations, and reports, and assisting with grant submissions and scientific publications. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and scientific software such as GraphPad Prism, along with excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, will support success in this role.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Technical Functions:

• Function in an independent manner, and have the ability to design research experiments. Discusses goals of each project with supervisor; with the help of supervisor, develops a step-by-step written procedure outlining the specific actions required to conduct the experiment before proceeding.
• Ability to work on several research projects concurrently in an independent manner.
• Compile research data and submit results to be included in publications, grants or protocols.

Laboratory Operation:

• The RAII will be responsible for the following laboratory operations: Provide technical and coordination expertise in carrying out various research projects, coordinates procedures, and performs technical laboratory duties in accordance with general and/or specific plans.
• Research literature and discuss with others in the lab new procedures and techniques to support projects around innate immune signaling events during base damaging cancer chemotherapy.
• Assembles and operates laboratory equipment and other tools.

Collaboration and Presentation:

• Interacts and participates in collaborative studies inside and outside MD Anderson.
• Trains other research personnel and students on established assays, and use of laboratory equipment.
• Presents research data at internal and external meetings and conferences.
• Prepare final reports in the format requested for the data generated by suggested due date.
• Willingness to learn and to help others in the implementation of new techniques.

Data Maintenance:

• Enter and maintain data from research activities in notebook/computer databases as appropriate.
• Performs and documents all required quality control/quality assurance.
• Maintains accurate, detailed records and experimental data and protocols.
• Prepares graphs, slides and tables via photography, computer, or manually.
• Collaborates or assists supervisor and senior research staff with preparation of reports and grant requests.
• Acquires and maintains proficiency in computer functions.
• Able to work with database, graphing and word processing computer programs such as Microsoft Excel, Power Point, Word and Prism.
• Must be able to fully communicate results and understand instructions from principal investigator and colleagues.

Education

• Required: Bachelor's Degree Basic Science.
• Preferred: Master's Degree Basic Science, PhD or Medical Degree.

WORK EXPERIENCE

• Required: 1 year Scientific or experimental research work experience. No experience required with preferred degree.
