Tips for Your Laboratory Assistant Job Search
Tailor your resume to each lab type
A clinical lab resume should lead with specimen handling and CLIA-regulated workflows, while an R&D or pharmaceutical role wants to see instrument calibration and chain-of-custody documentation. Swapping these emphases for each application materially changes your callback rate.
List equipment by exact model name
Hiring managers scan for specific instruments. Write 'Thermo Fisher Multiskan SkyHigh microplate reader' instead of 'ELISA equipment.' Exact model names signal hands-on experience and help your resume clear applicant-tracking-system keyword filters.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists laboratory assistant openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Earn a phlebotomy or MLT certificate strategically
If your target openings consistently require a certification you lack, a short phlebotomy or Medical Laboratory Technician certificate can unlock a new tier of postings. Check which credentials appear most in the listings you're targeting before enrolling.
Prepare a concrete example for every SOP question
Interviewers for lab roles routinely ask how you handle a deviation from a standard operating procedure. Rehearse one specific scenario where you identified an error, documented it correctly, and escalated through the right channel.
Follow up with a method-specific thank-you note
After your interview, reference a specific assay or instrument you discussed. A note that says 'I appreciated learning about your LC-MS workflow' demonstrates genuine technical engagement and sets you apart from candidates who send generic follow-ups.
Laboratory Assistant Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most laboratory assistants?
The companies hiring the most laboratory assistants right now include Trinity Health, University of California, San Francisco, and Quest Diagnostics, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Pennsylvania, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Hospital systems, reference labs, and pharmaceutical manufacturers consistently account for the bulk of postings nationwide.
How many laboratory assistant jobs are remote?
About 3% of laboratory assistant openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most lab work. The sub-areas most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements include data entry, lab informatics support, and virtual training coordination roles rather than bench or specimen-handling positions.
How do you become a laboratory assistant?
Most laboratory assistant roles require at minimum a high school diploma, though an associate degree in biology, chemistry, or a clinical laboratory science program strengthens your candidacy significantly. Completing a certificate program in phlebotomy or medical laboratory technology, gaining hands-on experience through an externship or volunteer placement, and learning relevant lab software and safety procedures puts you in a competitive position to apply.
Can you get hired as a laboratory assistant with little or no experience?
Yes, entry-level laboratory assistant positions exist specifically for candidates with limited professional experience. Emphasize any coursework involving lab techniques, highlight volunteer or internship hours in a science setting, and demonstrate familiarity with basic safety protocols and documentation practices. Academic or community college labs often hire students or recent graduates for part-time assistant roles that build your record quickly.
What does the laboratory assistant interview process look like?
Most laboratory assistant interviews follow two to three stages. A recruiter or HR screen covers availability and basic qualifications, followed by a technical interview with a lab supervisor who asks about specific instruments, specimen handling procedures, and how you respond to contamination events or SOP deviations. Some employers add a brief practical assessment where you demonstrate pipetting technique or explain a sample-processing workflow before an offer is extended.
Where can I find and apply to laboratory assistant jobs?
You can find and apply to laboratory assistant jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the available listings to find roles that match your experience and preferred location, then apply directly to each one that fits.
