Tips for Your Learning And Development Internship Search
Apply earlier than your instincts say
Large employers running structured learning and development cohorts open applications the fall before a summer start, often closing them months before the internship begins. Smaller companies and co-op programs post much closer to the start date. Check for openings in both windows so you don't miss the early cycle entirely.
Build a portfolio before you apply
L&D hiring teams want something to assess, and work history rarely provides it at the intern level. Create two or three documented projects, such as a sample training module, a needs-assessment report, a facilitation guide, or a storyboard for an eLearning course, and make them accessible via a link or PDF you can share directly in applications.
Work your campus network alongside direct applications
Career fairs surface structured L&D programs tied to your university, and recruiters there often move faster for students they meet in person. Professors in organizational psychology, education, or HR programs frequently know which employers recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Apply directly to companies running smaller cohorts at the same time to widen your reach.
Practice your intern interview format out loud
Learning and development intern screens often include a scenario or case question, such as diagnosing a performance gap or designing a short training outline, as well as behavioral questions about collaboration and communication. Practice answering these out loud, explaining your reasoning step by step, since interviewers weigh how you think through a problem as much as your final answer.
Target structured rotational and cohort programs
Larger employers run rotational L&D internships that move you through instructional design, facilitation, and talent development functions within a single term. These programs are built for people new to the field, offer structured mentorship, and recruit early. Identify the ones that match your interests and submit in the first application wave before spots fill.
Set your work-type filter before you start
On-site roles are 60% of the learning and development internships listed here, so decide what you can realistically commit to before you start sorting through openings. Filter by location and work type on Migrate Mate first, so every listing you spend time on is one you can actually accept.
Learning And Development Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a learning and development internship?
Lead with coursework and projects rather than work history, since hiring teams expect limited experience at the intern level. Build a portfolio of instructional design samples, training modules, or facilitation plans that recruiters can actually review. Combine direct applications with campus career fairs, where L&D recruiters often move faster for students they meet in person and can assess right away.
Can a learning and development internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What drives it for learning and development interns is performance on real deliverables, available headcount on the team, and whether you express interest before the return-offer window closes. Treat the internship as an extended audition, do strong work, and ask your manager early about the timeline, without counting on the outcome.
When should I apply for learning and development internships?
Earlier than most candidates expect. Large employers, especially those running structured L&D cohorts, recruit summer interns the preceding fall, with applications closing months before the start date. Smaller companies and co-op programs post much closer to when the role begins, so openings appear year-round. Checking regularly gives you the best shot at both types of opportunity.
Are learning and development internships paid?
Most professional learning and development internships in the U.S. are paid. Compensation varies by company size, industry, and location, and listings show it where the employer discloses it. Unpaid internships exist but are less common in corporate L&D settings than in some nonprofit or community-focused roles.
What should a learning and development internship resume include?
Lead with projects, not work history. Include two or three complete, documented projects that show what you built, the tools you used, and where reviewers can see the work, such as a linked instructional design sample, facilitation guide, needs-assessment write-up, or eLearning module. Add relevant coursework in instructional design, organizational behavior, or educational technology, and keep everything to one page.
Are there remote learning and development internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 40% of the learning and development internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts fill fast because they attract applicants from across the country, so apply early once you decide that format works for you, and filter by work type to see those roles without sorting through positions you cannot take.
What is a rotational learning and development internship?
Rotational L&D internships place you across multiple teams or functions, such as instructional design, facilitation, and talent analytics, within a single internship term. They are built to introduce people new to the field to the full scope of how a corporate L&D function operates. These programs are run by larger employers, recruit early in the hiring cycle, and are competitive, so identify the ones that fit your goals and apply in the first wave.
Can international students get learning and development internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
