About the role
Looking for an internship where you'll solve real business problems instead of simply observing from the sidelines?
As the FP&A Data Specialist, you'll join Selkirk's Finance team during an exciting period of organizational growth and systems transformation. Working directly with our Senior Financial Analyst, you'll help improve the way financial data is organized, connected, and reported across the business.
This is a hands-on opportunity to work with SQL, Power BI, Excel, and enterprise financial systems while helping build practical tools that improve reporting, automate manual processes, and support the transition to a new accounting platform. You'll play an important role in ensuring our data remains accurate, connected, and actionable as our systems and reporting structures evolve.
If you enjoy solving puzzles, building efficient solutions, and turning complex data into meaningful insights, you'll have the opportunity to make a real impact while developing highly transferable technical and analytical skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and build Excel, SQL, and Power BI based tools that improve reporting accuracy and streamline Finance processes.
- Help map, validate, and reconcile financial data between legacy and new systems during a company-wide accounting platform implementation.
- Develop solutions that maintain data integrity and preserve reporting visibility as financial systems, department structures, and the chart of accounts evolve.
- Write SQL queries to extract, organize, validate, and transform financial data.
- Support Power BI reporting by preparing datasets and assisting with dashboard development and reporting enhancements.
- Assist with month-end reporting through data validation, reconciliations, and budget-to-actual analysis.
- Identify opportunities to automate manual processes and improve reporting efficiency.
- Document reporting logic, data mapping, and Finance Department standard operating procedures to support long-term scalability.
- Collaborate with Finance and cross-functional teams to support data-related initiatives and special projects.
Qualifications
We're looking for someone who enjoys working with data, solving technical challenges, and continuously learning new tools. This role is ideal for someone looking to gain real-world experience applying technical skills in a finance environment.
What We're Looking For
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Analytics, Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Analytics, or a related field.
- Strong Excel skills with experience analyzing, organizing, and working with large datasets.
- Experience writing SQL queries through coursework, internships, research, or personal projects.
- Experience creating reports or dashboards using Power BI through coursework, internships, or independent projects is strongly preferred.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an interest in building practical solutions that improve efficiency.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate, reliable data.
- Comfortable learning new ERP systems, financial software, and business intelligence tools.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively in a remote environment.
- Self-motivated, curious, and eager to contribute while developing new technical skills.
If you're excited about this opportunity but don't meet every qualification, we still encourage you to apply. We value curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to learn just as much as technical knowledge.
Why You'll Love this Internship
- Work on meaningful projects that directly support business decisions.
- Gain hands-on experience with SQL, Power BI, Excel, and enterprise financial systems.
- Help solve real data and reporting challenges during a large-scale systems transformation.
- Learn alongside experienced Finance professionals in a collaborative, remote environment.
- Build technical and analytical skills that will prepare you for future careers in finance, analytics, business intelligence, or data engineering.

Tips for Your FP&A Analyst Internship Search
Apply in the fall for summer internships
Large employers in finance and corporate FP&A recruit their summer intern cohorts the preceding fall, sometimes closing applications by November. Smaller companies and co-op programs post much closer to start dates, so searching year-round catches both waves rather than missing the early window entirely.
Build a financial model you can walk through
Intern hiring teams expect limited work history, so a documented project carries more weight than an empty experience section. Build a three-statement model, a budgeting analysis, or a variance study using real public data, note the tools you used, and be ready to explain every assumption out loud.
Work your campus network and apply directly at the same time
Campus career fairs surface structured programs tied to your university, and professors or career center staff often know which employers recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Applying directly to companies running smaller FP&A cohorts alongside that campus activity widens the pool you actually reach.
Practice the FP&A intern screen before you apply
Most fp&a analyst intern interviews include a technical or case component, often a short modeling exercise or a question about how you would approach a budget variance. Practice explaining your reasoning out loud, not just reaching the right answer, because interviewers weigh how you think through ambiguity as much as the final output.
Target rotational and finance development programs early
Many larger employers run structured finance development or rotational programs built to train people new to FP&A, placing interns across planning, reporting, and analysis functions over a single term. These programs recruit early and fill their cohorts fast, so identify the ones that match your target industry and apply in the first wave of their cycle.
Set your work-type filter before you start searching
On-site roles are 25% of the fp&a analyst internships listed here. Decide what you can commit to before you open applications, then filter by location and work type so you are spending time on roles you can actually accept rather than sorting through ones that do not fit your situation.
FP&A Analyst Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get an fp&a analyst internship?
Lead with coursework and projects rather than work history, since recruiters expect limited experience at the intern level. The concrete artifact that gives hiring teams something to assess is a financial model or analysis you built yourself, whether from a class, a case competition, or a personal project. Pair direct applications with campus career fairs, where recruiters often make faster decisions for students they meet in person.
Can an fp&a analyst internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What actually drives it is the quality of your work on real deliverables, the team's headcount situation at the end of the term, and how early return-offer conversations happen. Position yourself by treating every project as something you would hand off permanently, and stay open to opportunities elsewhere in parallel.
When should I apply for fp&a analyst internships?
Earlier than most candidates expect. Large employers, particularly in finance and corporate sectors, recruit summer interns the preceding fall, often closing structured cohorts before the calendar year turns. Smaller companies and co-op programs post closer to their actual start dates, so openings appear year-round and searching consistently is more effective than waiting for a single peak window.
Are fp&a analyst internships paid?
Most professional fp&a analyst internships in the U.S. are paid. Compensation varies by company size, industry, and location, and listings show it where the employer chooses to disclose it. Unpaid arrangements are more common at very small organizations or nonprofit settings, so read each listing carefully if that distinction matters to your decision.
What should an fp&a analyst internship resume include?
Lead with two or three complete, documented projects rather than work history. For fp&a analyst candidates, that means financial models, variance analyses, or budgeting exercises you can describe with the tools used, such as Excel, SQL, or a planning platform, and ideally link to or reference directly. Add relevant coursework in accounting, corporate finance, or data analysis, and keep the whole document to one page.
Are there remote fp&a analyst internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 75% of the fp&a analyst internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts fill fast because they draw applicants from across the country, so apply early and use the work-type filter to see them without sorting through every listing.
Can international students get fp&a analyst internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
