Tips for Your Learning And Development Manager Internship Search
Apply for summer internships in the fall
Large employers open their summer L&D intern cohorts in September and October, months before the program starts. Smaller companies and co-op programs post closer to start dates, so roles appear year-round. Waiting until spring means competing for what is left after the first wave has already closed.
Build a portfolio before you apply
Without a long work history, your portfolio is your application. Create two or three documented projects, such as a training module built in an authoring tool, a needs assessment write-up, or a facilitation plan, and make them linkable. L&D recruiters want to see how you approach learning design, not just that you studied it.
Work your campus network and apply directly at the same time
Career fairs surface structured programs tied to your university, and professors with industry connections often know which employers recruit from your school before roles go public. Apply directly to companies running smaller cohorts alongside your campus activity so you are reaching openings that never make it to a university event.
Practice the L&D intern interview format out loud
Learning and development manager intern screens typically involve a scenario or case question, such as designing a short training for a given audience or diagnosing a performance gap. Practice answering these out loud, explaining your reasoning as you go, since interviewers weigh how you think through a problem as much as the final solution you land on.
Target structured L&D and HR rotational programs early
Larger employers run cohort or rotational programs specifically built to train candidates new to learning and development. These programs recruit on a fixed calendar, often filling in the fall for summer starts, and they are competitive. Identify which employers offer them, note their deadlines, and apply in the first wave rather than after the cohort is set.
Set your work-type filter before you start searching
On-site roles are 60% of the learning and development manager internships listed here. Decide what you can commit to before you start reviewing openings, then filter by location and work type so you are not sorting through roles you cannot accept. Filtering first saves time and keeps your application energy on the right opportunities.
Learning And Development Manager Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a learning and development manager internship?
Lead with coursework and projects rather than work history, since hiring teams expect limited experience at the intern level. A portfolio showing a training module, a needs assessment, or an instructional design sample gives recruiters something concrete to evaluate. Pair direct applications with campus career fairs, where L&D recruiters often move faster for students they meet in person.
Can a learning and development manager internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What drives it for L&D interns is delivering on real projects, building visible relationships with the team, and understanding whether the team has headcount to hire. Position for a return offer by treating every assignment as a work sample, but keep applying to other roles so you are not counting on it.
When should I apply for learning and development manager internships?
Earlier than most candidates expect. Large employers recruit summer interns the preceding fall, so applications for June starts often open in September and October. Smaller companies and co-op programs post closer to start dates, which means openings appear year-round. Checking listings regularly rather than waiting for a single season gives you a wider window of opportunity.
Are learning and development manager internships paid?
Most professional learning and development manager internships in the U.S. are paid. Compensation varies by company size, industry, and location, and listings show it where the employer chooses to disclose it. Unpaid arrangements exist, typically at nonprofits or small organizations, but they are less common in corporate L&D settings.
What should a learning and development manager internship resume include?
Lead with two or three documented projects rather than work history: name the tools you used, the learning objective each project addressed, and where the work can be seen, such as a linked training module, a curriculum outline, or a published case study. Add relevant coursework in instructional design, organizational psychology, or HR, and keep the whole document to one page.
Are there remote learning and development manager internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 40% of the learning and development manager internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts fill quickly because they attract applicants from across the country, so apply early once you decide remote works for you and filter by work type to surface those roles immediately.
What is an instructional design internship and how does it relate to L&D manager roles?
Instructional design internships are a structured entry point into the learning and development field, focused on building training content, assessments, and learner-facing materials. Many companies use them to develop candidates for broader L&D roles over time. These programs recruit early and are competitive, so identify which employers offer them and apply in the first wave of their recruiting cycle.
Can international students get learning and development manager internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
