Managed Care Coordinator Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a managed care coordinator in California?
Most managed care coordinator roles in California require at minimum an associate degree in a health-related field, with many employers preferring a bachelor's in nursing, social work, or health administration. A licensed clinical background, such as a California RN license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing, strengthens your candidacy significantly. Many coordinators also pursue the Certified Case Manager credential through the Commission for Case Manager Certification to meet employer preferences.
Which companies hire managed care coordinators in California?
Employers hiring managed care coordinators in California right now include North East Medical Services and UC Irvine Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's dense concentration of Medi-Cal managed care plans and integrated systems means large health plans and regional medical groups consistently post the highest volume of openings statewide.
Which California cities have the most managed care coordinator jobs?
Burlingame and Orange lead California for managed care coordinator openings. Los Angeles drives the highest volume through its concentration of Medi-Cal plan headquarters and large integrated systems, Sacramento reflects the state government and DHCS-contracted plan activity, and San Diego is anchored by Sharp Health Plan, Scripps Health, and a strong military-adjacent managed care sector.
Are there remote managed care coordinator jobs in California?
Yes, and more than many clinical roles. Managed care coordination is largely desk-based work involving authorization reviews, member outreach, and documentation, which lends itself well to remote arrangements. About 0% of managed care coordinator openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026. Utilization management and prior authorization roles tend to be the most consistently remote-eligible positions in this field.
How can I get hired as a managed care coordinator in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving laterally from a patient-facing role such as medical assistant, care navigator, or hospital discharge planner into a coordinator position at a California health plan or medical group. Kaiser Permanente and Inland Empire Health Plan regularly hire associate care coordinators and care management support specialists for candidates without full coordinator experience. Completing a case management fundamentals course and gaining exposure to Medi-Cal processes strengthens any application significantly.
