Business Consultant Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a business consultant in California?
Most business consultant roles in California require at minimum a bachelor's degree in business, economics, finance, or a related field, with no state-issued license required for general consulting practice. Earning a Certified Management Consultant designation through the Institute of Management Consultants USA strengthens candidacy significantly. California employers also value demonstrated project experience, so building a portfolio through internships, case competitions, or contract work at Bay Area or LA-based firms is a concrete starting point.
How much do business consultants make in California?
Business consultants in California earn a median of about $101,460 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $61,360 for the lowest 10% to over $174,970 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire business consultants in California?
Employers hiring business consultants in California right now include Alvarez & Marsal, KPMG, and BKF Engineers, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's density of technology headquarters, financial services firms, and healthcare systems means demand for consultants is consistent across both large global firms and regional boutique practices.
Which California cities have the most business consultant jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego have the most business consultant openings in California. The concentration follows California's major economic anchors: San Francisco and San Jose draw consulting demand from technology and venture-backed companies, Los Angeles from entertainment, media, and large enterprise clients, and San Diego from defense, biotech, and healthcare organizations that regularly engage external strategy support.
Are there remote business consultant jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. Business consulting is heavily desk-based and deliverable-driven, which makes it well suited to remote and hybrid arrangements. About 30% of business consultant openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how broadly the profession has adopted flexible work models. Strategy, research, and analysis work transfers most cleanly to remote settings, while client-facing implementation phases often require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a business consultant in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through an analyst or associate consultant role at a firm with a structured new-graduate program, such as the analyst cohorts that large consulting practices in San Francisco and Los Angeles run each year. Lateral moves from roles like financial analyst, project coordinator, or business operations specialist are common and well recognized by California hiring managers. A strong case interview performance and a demonstrated ability to structure problems, through coursework, internships, or a visible portfolio, matters more than years of experience at the entry level.
Where can I find and apply to business consultant jobs in California?
You can find and apply to business consultant jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across industries and experience levels. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly to each one.
