Business Consultant Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a business consultant in Illinois?
Business consulting in Illinois has no state-issued license, so the path runs through education and credentials. Most Illinois employers expect a bachelor's degree in business, finance, or a related field at minimum, with an MBA increasingly common for mid-level and senior roles. Certifications like the Certified Management Consultant designation from the Institute of Management Consultants USA strengthen a candidacy considerably. Building a portfolio of quantifiable project outcomes is what separates competitive applicants in the Illinois market.
How much do business consultants make in Illinois?
Business consultants in Illinois earn a median of about $104,270 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $57,610 for the lowest 10% to over $175,360 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire business consultants in Illinois?
Employers hiring business consultants in Illinois right now include Huron Consulting, AbbVie, and EY, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Illinois's dense concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters and major professional services firms in the Chicago metro means consistent, year-round demand across both external consulting firms and large corporate in-house strategy teams.
Which Illinois cities have the most business consultant jobs?
Chicago, North Chicago, and Lisle lead Illinois for business consultant openings. Chicago anchors the market as home to major consulting firm offices and hundreds of corporate headquarters, while Naperville and Schaumburg draw significant demand from the large suburban corporate campuses and regional operations centers that cluster along the Interstate 88 and 290 corridors west of the city.
Are there remote business consultant jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 83% of business consultant openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves analysis, reporting, and virtual client communication rather than on-site presence. Strategy, financial advisory, and technology consulting engagements are the sub-areas most commonly posted as fully remote or flexible in Illinois listings.
How can I get hired as a business consultant in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an associate consultant or business analyst role at a mid-size consulting firm or a rotational analyst program at a large Illinois corporation. Firms like Accenture and Deloitte run structured new-graduate analyst pipelines out of their Chicago offices, and companies like Caterpillar and Walgreens Boots Alliance offer rotational corporate development programs. Lateral moves from adjacent roles such as financial analyst, operations coordinator, or project analyst are a common route in, and earning a PMP or completing an MBA program at a Chicago-area school like Northwestern or DePaul gives candidates a measurable edge.
Where can I find and apply to business consultant jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to business consultant jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current Illinois openings updated regularly. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your background and target location, and apply directly to each position from the listing.
