Human Resources Manager Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a human resources manager in Illinois?
Illinois does not require a state-issued license to work as a human resources manager, so the path centers on education and professional credentials. Most Illinois employers expect at least a bachelor's degree in human resources or a related field, followed by several years of generalist or specialist HR experience. Earning the SHRM-CP or PHR certification through the Society for Human Resource Management or the HR Certification Institute strengthens candidacy significantly and is increasingly listed as preferred in Illinois postings.
How much do human resources managers make in Illinois?
Human resources managers in Illinois earn a median of about $151,370 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $90,820 for the lowest 10% to over $267,520 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire human resources managers in Illinois?
Employers hiring human resources managers in Illinois right now include Walmart, Medline Industries, and Levy, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Illinois's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters, large hospital networks, and major manufacturers means HR manager openings appear across a broad range of industries throughout the state.
Which Illinois cities have the most human resources manager jobs?
Chicago, Naperville, and Elk Grove Village have the most human resources manager openings in Illinois. Chicago dominates because of its density of corporate headquarters, healthcare systems, and financial services firms, while suburban corridors like Naperville and Schaumburg pull significant volume from the major employers clustered along the I-88 technology and business corridor.
Are there remote human resources manager jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than many management roles, since much of the strategic and administrative work of an HR manager can be done off-site. About 41% of human resources manager openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the desk-based nature of policy, compliance, and talent acquisition work. Employee relations and on-site HR business partner roles are more likely to require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a human resources manager in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into an HR coordinator or HR generalist role first, then building toward a manager title. Large Illinois employers such as Northwestern Medicine, Advocate Health Care, and major manufacturing firms in the Chicago metro regularly post entry-level HR associate and coordinator openings that serve as a direct pipeline. Completing a SHRM-CP certification while working in a coordinator role, or pursuing an HR-focused internship through the University of Illinois or DePaul University's business programs, gives candidates a clear edge when applying for manager-level openings.
Where can I find and apply to human resources manager jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to human resources manager jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current Illinois openings across industries and metro areas. Find roles that fit your experience and specialization and apply directly without needing to create an account or sign up.
