Tips for Your Human Resources Job Search
Tailor your resume to the ATS
HR hiring managers know exactly how applicant tracking systems parse resumes, so mirror the exact language from each job posting. Swap 'handled onboarding' for 'new-hire onboarding' if that's what the listing says. Literal keyword matching matters more here than in most fields.
List your SHRM or HRCI credentials prominently
Certifications like SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, and SPHR signal baseline competency to screeners immediately. Put them in your resume header or right below your name, not buried in a separate section, so they're visible before a recruiter reads a single bullet point.
Quantify employee-cycle metrics you've owned
Concrete numbers make HR resumes stand out fast. Mention headcount you've supported, time-to-fill averages you've improved, or turnover rates you've influenced. 'Supported 400-person workforce' reads stronger than 'assisted with HR operations for a large team.'
Filter openings by HR function, not just title
Searching only 'HR manager' misses roles posted as 'People Operations Manager' or 'Talent Partner.' Search by function, like talent acquisition, total rewards, or HRBP, to surface postings that match your specialty even when the title differs.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists human resources openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare data-backed answers for behavioral interviews
HR interviews lean heavily on situational questions about handling conflict, performance improvement plans, and investigations. Frame your answers using a clear situation, the action you took, and a measurable outcome, whether that's a resolved grievance, a retained employee, or a faster hiring cycle.
Human Resources Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most human resources professionals?
The companies hiring the most human resources professionals right now include McDonald's, Walgreens, and Amazon, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Healthcare systems, large retailers, and financial services firms consistently post high volumes of HR roles.
How many human resources jobs are remote?
About 12% of human resources openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making it one of the more flexible corporate functions for location-independent work. Talent acquisition, HR business partnering, and benefits administration roles tend to have the highest share of remote and hybrid arrangements compared to on-site-heavy roles like workplace investigations or facilities-tied HR generalists.
How do you become a human resources professional?
Start by earning a bachelor's degree in human resources, business, or psychology, then gain entry-level exposure through an HR coordinator or assistant role. Pursue a SHRM-CP or PHR certification to demonstrate foundational competency. Build experience across at least two HR functions, such as recruiting and employee relations, before moving into a generalist or specialist role with broader scope.
How do you get hired in human resources with little experience?
Target HR coordinator, HR assistant, or recruiting coordinator roles, which are the most common entry points into the field. Volunteer experience with nonprofit HR operations, an internship, or even managing hiring for a student organization counts as relevant exposure. Earning a SHRM student membership and completing their HR essentials coursework signals genuine commitment to screeners reviewing candidates without formal work history.
What does the human resources interview process look like?
Most HR hiring processes start with a phone screen from a recruiter or hiring manager, followed by a structured behavioral interview focused on employee relations scenarios, compliance knowledge, and cross-functional collaboration. Mid-to-senior roles often include a case study or take-home exercise, such as drafting a performance improvement plan or analyzing turnover data. Final rounds typically involve meeting department leaders or HR business partners.
Where can I find and apply to human resources jobs?
You can find and apply to human resources jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search for roles that match your experience level and HR specialty, then apply directly to each listing. No intermediary steps are required between finding a role and submitting your application.
