Mid Level Managing Editor Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a mid level managing editor job?
Position yourself around ownership rather than contribution. Highlight editorial projects you led from brief to publication, decisions you made independently, and any cross-functional coordination you drove. Tailor your resume to show scope, not just output. Employers at this level want evidence you can hold a content operation together without constant direction, so concrete examples of managing workflows, hitting deadlines, and maintaining quality standards carry the most weight.
Which companies hire mid level managing editors?
Companies hiring mid level managing editors right now include The New York Times, Dow Jones, and Owner, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. At this experience level, hiring comes from a wide mix of media organizations, content-driven brands, and digital publishers that need editors who can take ownership of a beat or platform without heavy supervision.
Are there remote mid level managing editor jobs?
Yes, remote and hybrid options are common at this level. About 48% of mid level managing editor openings are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how editorial work has shifted toward distributed teams. Fully on-site roles still exist, particularly at regional outlets and organizations with print operations, so the mix varies by employer type and market.
How do I move up to a mid level managing editor role?
The path from entry level to mid level is built on taking on progressively larger ownership over time. Start by leading smaller projects independently, then pursue opportunities to manage a section, a content channel, or a team of freelancers. Demonstrating measurable impact, such as improved publishing cadence, audience growth, or cleaner editorial pipelines, signals readiness. Deepening a subject-matter specialty also helps differentiate you when mid level roles open up.
Which industries hire the most mid level managing editors?
Mid Level managing editor roles concentrate in Technology & Software, Media & Entertainment, and Education, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. These sectors drive consistent hiring because they rely on structured content operations, regular publishing schedules, and editors who can manage contributors and maintain editorial standards across multiple formats or channels.
