Summary:
The Manufacturing Engineer will oversee the entire lifecycle of high-precision babbitt bearings, bridging the gap between sales, engineering, and the production floor. This role is responsible for the complete workflow: initial project estimation and government bidding, reverse engineering and solid modeling, order entry and routing creation, shop floor programming support, and direct customer technical service.
Core Responsibilities
1. Quoting & Estimating
- Specification Review: Analyze all technical project specifications to ensure the facility can meet strict metallurgical, geometric, and quality demands.
- Capacity Planning: Check directly with production management to evaluate current scheduling, work-load capacity, and lead times before finalizing bids.
- Government Proposals: Prepare comprehensive bid packages tailored for government and defense procurement opportunities.
- Process Estimation: Estimate material, labor, and tooling requirements to develop efficient manufacturing processes for new product bids.
2. Order Entry & Procurement
- Process Routing: Input customer orders into the system and create highly detailed manufacturing process routings and operational notes for the production floor.
- Material Procurement: Purchase all raw materials, bearing backing metals, babbitt alloys, and specialized tooling required for incoming jobs.
- Shop Floor Documentation: Supply accurate prints, technical sketches, and work instructions directly to production technicians.
3. Project Engineering & Design
- Process Print Development: Create specialized process prints for new manufacturing jobs to guide the casting and machining phases.
- Design Optimization: Review solid models and blueprints from past production runs to edit, modify, and implement continuous design improvements.
- Reverse Engineering: Reverse engineer customer-supplied physical parts to generate precise, functional solid prints and 3D models for manufacturing.
- Technical Support: Serve as the internal expert to answer technical, metallurgical, and mechanical questions raised by production personnel.
- Customer Approvals: Provide modified solid prints to customers for review and approval if design changes are required.
4. CNC Programming & Shop Support
- Machining Assistance: Assist shop floor personnel with complex programming challenges, part layouts, and machining processes.
- Program Proofing: Write, optimize, and prove out CNC programs for repeat manufacturing runs to ensure consistency and quality.
- Hands-on Production: Step in to set up and operate machining equipment when necessary to eliminate bottlenecks and keep production flowing.
5. Customer Service & Project Management
- Technical Liaison: Act as the primary point of contact for designated projects, providing technical support and clear expertise directly to clients.
- Timeline Updates: Keep customers routinely informed with active schedule updates and milestones.
- Logistics Coordination: Seamlessly coordinate customer delivery instructions, packaging needs, and shipping requirements with production and logistics teams.
6. Strategic Management
- Continuous Improvement: Partner closely with department managers to optimize manufacturing efficiencies, reduce scrap, and implement lean practices.
- Growth Initiatives: Proactively contribute fresh, innovative ideas to help the company scale, increase profitability, and improve overall operational success.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Design & Modeling: Proven proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Mastercam) with strong skills in reverse engineering physical components.
- Machining Knowledge: Hands-on experience with CNC programming, setup, and machine operation (turning, milling, or boring).
- Government Bidding: Familiarity with preparing government contract bid packages and interpreting strict regulatory compliance standards is a strong asset.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in similar role
- Mastercam Programming experience
Key Skills & Competencies
- Multitasking & Autonomy: Ability to shift seamlessly from high-level client management to hands-on troubleshooting on the machine shop floor.
- High-Precision Focus: Acute attention to detail required for managing micro-inch surface finishes and tight geometric tolerances (GD&T).
- Commercial Acumen: Strong technical estimating skills to ensure accurate project costing and healthy profit margins.

Work Environment

These include: forklift traffic, overhead cranes, machining, airborne particles, moving of mechanical parts and moderate noise. The work is performed indoors in a shop environment. Many hats can be worn in different positions, and past experiences can provide new ideas for the continuous improvement of the company. Each team member has a direct role, but are expected to branch from these roles to help in the direction the company desires
