Digestive and Liver Health Specialists is seeking a friendly, dependable, and motivated Medical Assistant to join our growing gastroenterology practice.

This is a hands-on, patient-facing position that combines traditional medical assistant responsibilities with endoscopy support and scope reprocessing. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in a busy clinical environment, enjoys interacting with patients, and is willing to assist wherever needed to keep the practice running efficiently.

Endoscope cleaning and reprocessing are important responsibilities of this position.

Candidates must be comfortable handling medical instruments, following detailed infection prevention protocols, and assisting with endoscopy procedures.

As a team-oriented practice, we expect our medical assistants to provide cross-coverage throughout the clinic as needed. This may include patient intake, rooming, assisting providers, diagnostic testing such as FibroScan, scheduling, and occasional front desk support.

Key Responsibilities

Endoscopy and Scope Reprocessing

• Clean, disinfect, and reprocess flexible endoscopes according to manufacturer instructions and established infection prevention protocols.
• Perform scope pre-cleaning, leak testing, manual cleaning, high-level disinfection, drying, and proper storage following training and competency verification.
• Assist with preparation of endoscopy procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment.
• Support physicians and clinical staff during endoscopy procedures as directed and within assigned responsibilities.
• Assist with procedure room turnover, cleaning, and preparation between patients.
• Maintain accurate scope processing records and equipment logs.
• Monitor endoscopy supplies and maintain an organized, safe processing environment.
• Follow all applicable infection control, OSHA, and facility safety requirements.

Medical Assistant and Clinical Support

• Room patients, obtain vital signs, and document chief complaints and relevant medical histories.
• Review and update patient medications, allergies, and other information in the electronic medical record.
• Prepare examination rooms and assist physicians and providers with patient visits and office procedures.
• Assist with patient education, including colonoscopy preparation instructions and other provider-directed care.
• Perform or assist with diagnostic testing, including FibroScan, following appropriate training.
• Assist with office-based procedures such as hemorrhoid banding and anorectal manometry when appropriately trained and supervised.
• Support patient scheduling, referrals, prescription requests, diagnostic testing, and other clinical orders as directed.
• Respond to patient questions and telephone messages within assigned responsibilities.
• Maintain clean, stocked, and organized examination rooms and clinical work areas.
• Assist with patient check-in, insurance verification, scheduling, and other front office responsibilities when cross-coverage is needed.

Teamwork and General Responsibilities

• Provide cross-coverage for clinical and administrative team members based on daily staffing and patient care needs.
• Work collaboratively with physicians, nurses, medical assistants, and administrative staff.
• Maintain a welcoming, compassionate, and professional environment for patients and families.
• Follow established practice policies, clinical protocols, HIPAA requirements, and infection prevention standards.
• Complete all required training and continuing education.
• Maintain accurate documentation and demonstrate strong attention to detail.
• Prioritize responsibilities effectively in a busy, fast-paced medical practice.
• Demonstrate punctuality, reliability, accountability, and a willingness to help other team members.
• Travel occasionally between practice locations as needed.

Qualifications Required

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Comfortable performing hands-on clinical duties, including endoscope cleaning and reprocessing.
• Willingness to learn and follow detailed equipment cleaning, disinfection, and infection prevention procedures.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Friendly, compassionate, and professional approach to patient care.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to multitask and adapt to changing responsibilities in a busy medical practice.
• Basic computer proficiency and willingness to learn electronic medical record systems.

• Reliable transportation and ability to travel occasionally between practice locations.

Preferred but Not Required

• Previous experience as a Medical Assistant, Endoscopy Technician, or in an outpatient medical practice.
• Experience with endoscope cleaning, high-level disinfection, or medical instrument reprocessing.
• Experience assisting with endoscopy or other outpatient procedures.
• Familiarity with electronic medical records, medical terminology, and patient scheduling.
• Experience obtaining vital signs, rooming patients, and assisting medical providers.
• Completion of a medical assisting program or associate degree.
• Medical Assistant certification.
• Spanish language proficiency is highly valued, and bilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

Prior gastroenterology experience is a plus, but we welcome candidates with relevant healthcare experience and a willingness to learn.

• Primarily based in Nashville, with occasional travel to our Smyrna clinic.
• Combination of outpatient clinic and endoscopy center responsibilities.
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, and movement throughout clinical areas.
• Ability to lift up to 20 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Potential exposure to biological materials, used medical instruments, and approved disinfecting agents while following established safety precautions.
