Medical Physicist Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a medical physicist in New York?
New York requires medical physicists to hold a state license issued by the New York State Department of Health, which mandates a graduate degree in medical physics or a related physical science from a CAMPEP-accredited program, completion of a CAMPEP-accredited residency, and board certification through the American Board of Radiology. Candidates apply directly to the DOH for licensure after meeting those requirements. Most New York employers will not extend an offer without confirmed licensure eligibility.
Which companies hire medical physicists in New York?
Employers hiring medical physicists in New York right now include Maimonides Medical Center, NYU Langone Health, and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of NCI-designated cancer centers and large academic health systems means hiring tends to be continuous rather than seasonal, with staff physicist and clinical physics roles turning over regularly.
Which New York cities have the most medical physicist jobs?
Brooklyn, New York, and Flushing have the most medical physicist openings in New York. New York City dominates because of its dense cluster of academic medical centers and freestanding cancer treatment facilities, while Buffalo and Rochester sustain consistent demand through institutions like Roswell Park and the University of Rochester Medical Center, which run active clinical physics programs and have large radiation oncology departments.
Are there remote medical physicist jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. About 44% of medical physicist openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which reflects the hands-on nature of most clinical physics work. The exceptions tend to be in treatment planning review, telehealth physics consultation, and certain regulatory compliance or quality assurance oversight roles that do not require direct equipment contact.
How can I get hired as a medical physicist in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a CAMPEP-accredited residency, and New York offers some of the strongest options in the country through programs at Memorial Sloan Kettering, NewYork-Presbyterian, and Roswell Park. Candidates without a residency can look for junior clinical physicist or physics assistant roles at community hospital systems in upstate New York, where competition is lower than in the city. ABR Part 1 passage and a strong dosimetry background from an adjacent role substantially improve placement odds.
Where can I find and apply to medical physicist jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to medical physicist jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the listings, find the roles that fit your credentials and location, and apply directly to each employer.
