INTRODUCTION
The Proton Therapy Center at Cincinnati Children’s is one of only about 45 centers in the country. Proton therapy is one of the most advanced technological developments in the field of radiation oncology. Proton therapy delivers tumor destroying doses of radiation while sparing more healthy tissues than conventional radiation, effectively reducing side effects for patients while minimizing risk of secondary cancer as a result of treatment. The proton therapy facility is supported by a multi-disciplinary group consisting of physicians, scientists, physicists, radiation therapists, nurses and other supporting clinical staff.
The Medical Physics group at the proton therapy center is responsible for machine quality assurance, patient quality assurance, treatment planning, clinical support, and radiation safety, in addition to other facility supportive responsibilities. Furthermore, the Medical Physics group is integral to the ongoing research and development mission at the proton therapy center. The Proton Co-Op Student (PCOS) works alongside the Medical Physicists and Physics Assistants in support of the proton therapy center.
The Proton Co-Op Student primarily engages in three activities. First, the PCOS works alongside the Medical Physics group engaging in all tasks related to Quality Management Program of the Proton Therapy Center. Second, the PCOS supports a clinical or development project, which is hands-on, practical and related to a goal of improving either the efficiency or efficacy of the proton therapy center. Third, the PCOS works with the Medical Physics and Therapy staffs to identify operational improvement opportunities and proposes and implements a solution. All of this work is under the supervision and at the instruction of the Medical Physics group.
