Dental Hygienist Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a dental hygienist in New York?
To become a dental hygienist in New York, you must graduate from a dental hygiene program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination, and pass a clinical board exam accepted by New York State. You then apply for a license through the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions. New York requires this license before you may practice, and it must be renewed every three years.
How much do dental hygienists make in New York?
Dental hygienists in New York earn a median of about $106,130 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,680 for the lowest 10% to over $126,640 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire dental hygienists in New York?
Employers hiring dental hygienists in New York right now include United Dental Corporation, Aspen Dental, and Newark Wayne Community Hospital, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's density of large group dental practices, federally qualified health centers, and academic medical center dental clinics makes it one of the more active hiring markets for this role in the northeastern United States.
Which New York cities have the most dental hygienist jobs?
The cities with the most dental hygienist openings in New York are Rochester, Bronx, and Manhattan. New York City dominates the distribution because of its sheer concentration of private practices, group dental organizations, and hospital-based dental clinics, while Buffalo and Albany reflect strong regional demand from community health systems and university-affiliated dental programs anchored in those metros.
Are there remote dental hygienist jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Dental hygiene is a hands-on clinical role that requires direct patient care, so fully remote positions are uncommon by nature. About 0% of dental hygienist openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those postings typically involve non-clinical functions such as patient outreach coordination, telehealth pre-screening, or dental hygiene education and consulting roles rather than chair-side practice.
How can I get hired as a dental hygienist in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to large group dental organizations and federally qualified health centers in New York City, Buffalo, and Albany that routinely hire new graduates. Employers like Aspen Dental and community health networks affiliated with the Health Resources and Services Administration often provide structured onboarding for entry-level hygienists. Completing a clinical externship at a New York-based facility before graduation and holding a current New York State dental hygienist license on your first day of eligibility gives you a clear edge over candidates still awaiting licensure.
Where can I find and apply to dental hygienist jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to dental hygienist jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring in the state right now. Search the listings for roles that match your experience level, specialty, and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
