Mental Health Worker Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a mental health worker in Texas?
Most entry-level mental health worker roles in Texas require at least a bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or a closely related field. Positions at state-funded community mental health centers often require registration through the Texas Department of State Health Services or certification through the Texas Certification Board of Addiction Professionals, depending on the setting. Employers in residential and crisis care typically require completion of department-specific training within the first few months of hire.
Which companies hire mental health workers in Texas?
Employers hiring mental health workers in Texas right now include Houston Methodist, University Health, and DaVita, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas also has a substantial public-sector market, with the Department of State Health Services and local mental health authorities operating centers in every major region.
Which Texas cities have the most mental health worker jobs?
Houston, San Antonio, and Austin have the most mental health worker openings in Texas right now. Houston and Dallas drive the largest share of listings due to their dense hospital networks, large community mental health authorities, and high population need, while San Antonio's openings are concentrated around its significant veterans' services infrastructure and growing outpatient behavioral health sector.
Are there remote mental health worker jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're limited. Mental health worker roles are primarily hands-on and site-based, involving direct client contact, crisis response, or residential support that cannot be done remotely. About 10% of mental health worker openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to be concentrated in care coordination, telehealth support, or administrative case management rather than direct clinical or residential work.
How can I get hired as a mental health worker in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a psychiatric technician or mental health technician role at a Texas state hospital or community mental health center, where on-the-job training is standard and a bachelor's degree can substitute for prior experience. Large Texas systems such as CHRISTUS Health and Texas Health Resources run structured behavioral health associate programs for new graduates. Moving laterally from a peer support specialist, case aide, or residential counselor role is another common route, and obtaining a Texas Certified Peer Specialist credential gives candidates a meaningful competitive edge with public-sector employers.
Where can I find and apply to mental health worker jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to mental health worker jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings updated regularly. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience level, preferred city, and work setting, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
