Nephrologist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a nephrologist in California?
Becoming a nephrologist in California requires completing medical school, an internal medicine residency, and a nephrology fellowship accredited by the ACGME, followed by obtaining an unrestricted license from the California Medical Board. After training, candidates must pass the ABIM nephrology certification exam. California also requires a separate Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System registration before prescribing controlled medications in the state.
How much do nephrologists make in California?
Nephrologists in California earn a median of about $281,590 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $80,590 for the lowest 10% to over $431,980 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire nephrologists in California?
Employers hiring nephrologists in California right now include Alameda Health System, Loma Linda University Health, and The Permanente Medical Group, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's mix of large integrated health systems, academic medical centers, and regional dialysis networks means openings appear across both employed and independent practice models throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most nephrologist jobs?
Oakland, Loma Linda, and San Francisco have the most nephrologist openings in California. Los Angeles drives the largest share through its dense concentration of major health systems and academic hospitals, while San Francisco and San Diego are anchored by university medical centers and research-affiliated networks that maintain consistent demand for fellowship-trained kidney specialists.
Are there remote nephrologist jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Nephrology is a procedurally intensive specialty requiring direct patient evaluation, dialysis management, and hospital rounds, which limits fully remote arrangements. About 0% of nephrologist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those roles tend to be in telenephrology consultations or chronic disease management programs that supplement an in-person practice rather than replace it.
How can I get hired as a nephrologist in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a new-graduate or first-year attending position at a large California health system that regularly onboards fellowship completers, such as Kaiser Permanente or a UC Health affiliate. These systems run structured onboarding programs and pair new nephrologists with senior mentors. Candidates who have completed a California-based fellowship already have an advantage through established clinical relationships. Securing California Medical Board licensure and ABIM board eligibility before applying demonstrates readiness and accelerates hiring decisions.
Where can I find and apply to nephrologist jobs in California?
You can find and apply to nephrologist jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings from employers actively hiring. Find the roles that fit your specialty, training background, and preferred location, then apply directly through each listing.
