Neurosurgeon Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a neurosurgeon in New York?
Becoming a neurosurgeon in New York requires earning a medical degree, completing a seven-year accredited neurosurgical residency, and obtaining a New York State medical license through the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions. Licensure requires passing all three steps of the USMLE. Most New York hospitals also require board certification through the American Board of Neurological Surgery before granting full attending privileges.
How much do neurosurgeons make in New York?
Neurosurgeons in New York earn a median of about $242,500 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $86,250 for the lowest 10% to over $414,440 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire neurosurgeons in New York?
Employers hiring neurosurgeons in New York right now include Catholic Health, NYU Langone Health, and Newark Wayne Community Hospital, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense concentration of academic medical centers and large integrated health systems means openings appear across the state year-round, including at teaching hospitals affiliated with major university programs.
Which New York cities have the most neurosurgeon jobs?
The cities with the most neurosurgeon openings in New York are Roslyn, Patchogue, and Rochester. New York City dominates due to its density of Level I trauma centers, academic medical centers, and specialty neuroscience institutes, while Buffalo and Albany see consistent demand driven by large regional health systems and medical school affiliates that serve upstate populations.
Are there remote neurosurgeon jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Neurosurgery is a hands-on surgical specialty requiring direct patient care and operating room presence, making fully remote positions uncommon. About 0% of neurosurgeon openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those roles are typically in telehealth neurology consultation, surgical case review, or medical director and administrative functions rather than direct surgical practice.
How can I get hired as a neurosurgeon in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a junior attending or clinical instructor position at a New York academic medical center immediately following residency completion. Institutions such as NYU Langone Health, Northwell Health, and NewYork-Presbyterian regularly recruit graduating residents into structured early-career attending roles. Fellowship training in cerebrovascular surgery, spine, or pediatric neurosurgery also strengthens candidacy significantly, and holding an active New York State medical license before applying gives candidates a clear edge over those still in the licensure process.
