Operating Room Technician Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a operating room technician in Illinois?
Illinois does not require a state-issued license for operating room technicians, but most employers require national certification. Complete an accredited surgical technology program, typically an Associate of Applied Science or a certificate from an Illinois community college or hospital-based program, then sit for the Certified Surgical Technologist exam administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting. Employers across Illinois treat the CST credential as a practical hiring requirement for most full-time OR technician positions.
Which companies hire operating room technicians in Illinois?
Employers hiring operating room technicians in Illinois right now include American Traveler, Advocate Aurora Health, and UChicago Medicine, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Illinois's dense concentration of large academic medical centers and multi-hospital health systems means hiring volume is relatively consistent throughout the year, particularly in the Chicago metro and central Illinois markets.
Which Illinois cities have the most operating room technician jobs?
Chicago, Rockford, and Oak Lawn account for the largest share of operating room technician openings in Illinois. Chicago drives the highest volume by far, anchored by its academic medical centers and Level I trauma hospitals, while Springfield and Peoria support steady demand through regional health systems like OSF HealthCare and HSHS Medical Group, which serve wide catchment areas across central and downstate Illinois.
Are there remote operating room technician jobs in Illinois?
Yes, but they're rare. Operating room technician work is inherently hands-on and requires physical presence in a sterile surgical environment, so fully remote positions essentially do not exist for core scrub tech duties. About 0% of operating room technician openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of August 2026. The small remote-adjacent share typically covers surgical technology education, vendor training, or sterile processing coordination roles rather than direct patient-care positions.
How can I get hired as a operating room technician in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a surgical technology externship or clinical rotation built into your accredited program, which Illinois community colleges like Advocate Health's School of Surgical Technology and Heartland Community College structure directly into their curricula. Large systems such as Northwestern Medicine and Advocate Aurora Health regularly hire new graduates into scrub technician roles, and candidates coming from central sterile processing or surgical nursing assistant positions have a meaningful advantage. Earning the CST credential before applying, even without paid OR experience, significantly strengthens your candidacy.
Where can I find and apply to operating room technician jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to operating room technician jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to Illinois employers and surgical facilities. Search the available roles, identify the positions that match your credentials and preferred location, and apply directly through each listing. No signup is needed to search.
