Overview

The mission of the City of Boston Assessing Department is to accurately collect data, assess property at its full and fair cash value, and provide prompt and courteous service to the public. The Assessing Department is a leader in municipal valuation and seeks to maintain that status by attracting talented experience to our core staffing.

Serving as a key advisor to the Director of Operations, the Deputy’s primary responsibility is to assist the Director in overseeing day-to-day management and operations of key departmental units by planning, coordinating, and administering projects, overseeing staff performance, and reviewing and evaluating policies, procedures, and processes for efficiency of operations. The Deputy assists the Director of Operations in leading and directing senior management staff, ensuring fiscal responsibility, performance accountability, organizational structure, and workforce development. Represents and serves as the department liaison, as well as a key figure and decision-maker in the Director’s absence.

Responsibilities

• Manage departmental units and supervise staff.
• Oversee the Fiscal Operations Unit, Support Services Unit, Technical Services Unit, Information System Unit, and their respective functions.
• Responsible for planning and coordinating the budget process.
• Oversee management of fiscal activities.
• Coordinate and administer a wide array of complex managerial and administrative projects regarding ongoing departmental operational needs, organizational structure, facility management, and support services.
• Perform related work as required by the department.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications

• Five (5) years of professional experience in administration and business management, finance, or related areas, of which four (4) years must have been in a supervisory capacity.
• A Master’s degree in business administration, public administration, or an equivalent may be substituted for three (3) years of this experience. A Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, or an equivalent may be substituted for two (2) years of this experience.
• Exceptional oral and written communication skills and the ability to effectively interact with internal and external stakeholders.
• Demonstrated leadership and management skills required.
• Demonstrated ability to meet operational goals in the required timeframe preferred.
• Knowledge of office operations, budgets, finance, organizational dynamics, and computer and other technology preferred.
• Accuracy and attention to detail.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, BAIS Financials, and Hyperion Planning is a plus.
• Ability to exercise good judgment and problem-solving as required by the job.
