Tips for Your Operations Director Job Search
Quantify scope on your resume
Operations director roles reward scale. List the number of direct reports you managed, the budget you owned, and the revenue or cost impact of your initiatives. Hiring managers scan for these figures before reading anything else.
Tailor for industry-specific language
A logistics operations director resume reads differently than one for a hospital system. Mirror the exact terminology in each job posting, whether that's throughput, patient flow, or fulfillment rate, so your application clears automated screening.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists operations director openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target companies mid-transformation
Operations directors are most often hired during rapid growth, post-merger integration, or operational overhauls. Look for companies that recently announced expansion, restructuring, or new leadership, because those needs drive the majority of open roles.
Prepare a process improvement case study
Interviewers at this level consistently ask for a before-and-after example of an operation you rebuilt. Have one story ready that names the inefficiency, the method you used to diagnose it, and the measurable outcome you delivered.
Negotiate beyond base salary
Operations director offers often include performance bonuses tied to cost savings or efficiency targets. Understand how those metrics are set and measured before accepting, because the structure of the bonus can matter as much as the base.
Operations Director Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most operations directors?
The companies hiring the most operations directors right now include Alvarez & Marsal, Fivetran, and AbbVie, with the largest share of openings in California, New York, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is particularly strong in healthcare systems, logistics networks, and multi-location retail and hospitality groups.
How many operations director jobs are remote?
About 27% of operations director openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, though the share varies significantly by industry. Roles focused on strategy, vendor management, and process design are most likely to allow remote work, while positions overseeing physical facilities, warehouses, or clinical sites almost always require on-site presence.
How do you become an operations director?
Most operations directors move up through frontline management, then mid-level roles like operations manager or senior manager, building cross-functional experience along the way. Developing a specialty in process improvement, supply chain, or a specific industry accelerates the path. Earning a Lean or Six Sigma certification and taking on P&L responsibility at an earlier level signals readiness for director-level work.
Can you get an operations director job without direct director experience?
Yes, especially if you can demonstrate scope equivalent to director-level work under a different title. Candidates who have led large teams, managed significant budgets, or driven measurable cost or efficiency outcomes as a senior manager often compete successfully. Emphasizing the scale and complexity of your work, rather than the title you held, is the most effective approach.
What does the operations director interview process look like?
Most operations director searches involve a recruiter screen, a hiring manager conversation focused on experience and leadership style, and then a panel or executive round where you present on a past operational challenge. Final-stage interviews often include a case study or operations audit exercise. The process typically takes several weeks and may require references from direct reports as well as supervisors.
Where can I find and apply to operations director jobs?
You can find and apply to operations director jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that match your experience and industry background, then apply directly to each listing. All openings are organized so you can move quickly when you find a strong fit.
