Position Overview
Young Musicians Unite is seeking an accomplished Chief Operating Officer to lead the organization's internal operations and help build the management infrastructure required to sustain rapid growth.
Reporting directly to the CEO, the COO will serve as YMU's senior operating executive and a central member of the executive leadership team. The COO will oversee organizational execution, leadership team management, finance and administrative oversight, people systems, cross-functional coordination, organizational planning, performance management, and the systems and processes that enable YMU to operate effectively at scale.
YMU operates on the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS), and the COO will serve in the organization's Integrator role. In partnership with the CEO and leadership team, the COO will drive organizational alignment, accountability, execution, issue resolution, and the disciplined operating rhythms that keep YMU moving toward its goals. Prior EOS experience is preferred but not required. What matters most is a demonstrated ability to perform the work of an exceptional Integrator.
This is a broad organizational leadership role designed for an experienced executive who has successfully led within an organization of comparable or greater complexity.
The COO will strengthen how YMU operates, develop its leaders, clarify accountability, improve organizational visibility, and build the infrastructure required for continued growth.
The COO must also preserve the qualities that have enabled YMU to grow: entrepreneurial thinking, speed, creativity, resourcefulness, strong relationships, and commitment to the mission.
Success in this role means a stronger, more accountable, coordinated, financially disciplined organization that can scale without sacrificing quality or culture.
Core Responsibilities
- Serve as YMU's senior operating leader and EOS Integrator, translating strategy into execution.
- Lead and develop the senior leadership team, creating clear ownership, accountability, and high performance.
- Own YMU's EOS operating cadence, including planning, Rocks, scorecards, Level 10 Meetings, issue solving, and follow-through.
- Strengthen organizational structure, management, talent planning, and performance management as YMU grows.
- Oversee finance in partnership with the Controller and CEO, including budgeting, forecasting, financial performance, risk, and resource allocation.
- Ensure YMU's people, administrative, compliance, and core operating functions are reliable and well managed.
- Drive cross-functional coordination and resolve unclear ownership, competing priorities, bottlenecks, and execution problems.
- Build simple, scalable systems that improve performance without unnecessary bureaucracy.
- Maintain clear visibility into organizational performance and surface important risks, issues, and decisions early.
- Serve as a trusted operating partner to the CEO and support the Board with clear operational and financial reporting.
Qualifications
Required Experience & Skills
- 10+ years of progressive leadership experience, including significant senior executive responsibility.
- Demonstrated success scaling an organization of comparable or greater size and complexity.
- Experience in a COO, President, Executive Director, Managing Director, or similarly broad leadership role.
- Significant experience managing senior leaders and building high-performing teams. Proven record of improving organizational execution, management, systems, or performance.
- Strong financial and business acumen, including budgeting, forecasting, planning, and resource allocation.
- Proven ability to create clarity, accountability, and effective systems in a fast-moving organization.
- Excellent judgment, problem-solving, decision-making, and communication skills.
- High integrity, maturity, and ability to build trust with employees, executives, board members, and external partners.
Preferred Background
- Experience with EOS, particularly as an Integrator or senior leadership team member.
- Experience scaling a rapidly growing organization.
- Experience in an entrepreneurial or founder-led environment. Experience leading a multi-site, distributed-workforce, education, service-delivery, or similarly complex organization.
- Experience working with boards of directors.
- Experience in nonprofit, education, youth development, arts, or another mission-driven field.
- Success improving systems, processes, data visibility, and technology.
Nonprofit experience is preferred but not required. YMU welcomes proven leaders from the private, public, and nonprofit sectors who have successfully led complex organizations.
Education
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and executive leadership experience.
- MBA, MPA, or other advanced degree is a plus but not required.
