Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship as an Assistant Construction Manager
Confirm your degree qualifies for STEM OPT
Construction management and civil engineering degrees on the STEM designated degree program list qualify for the 24-month OPT extension. Verify your specific CIP code with your DSO before accepting a role to avoid authorization gaps.
Apply before your OPT start date approaches
Construction firms run background checks and onboarding that can take three to six weeks. Starting your job search four to five months before your current status expires gives you enough runway to clear all pre-employment requirements.
Highlight project management software skills prominently
Proficiency in Procore, Autodesk Build, or Primavera P6 signals immediate on-site value. Firms weighing OPT sponsorship overhead are more likely to move forward when a candidate reduces the ramp-up time they'd otherwise absorb.
Be transparent about your OPT timeline upfront
Bringing up your work authorization status early in conversations builds trust and filters out firms unwilling to sponsor before you invest time in their process. It also gives compliance teams adequate lead time to prepare paperwork.
Focus on mid-size regional contractors, not only large nationals
Regional firms with steady project pipelines often sponsor OPT students because local talent pools are thin. They move faster than large nationals and are more flexible on visa processing timelines when they want a specific candidate.
Assistant Construction Manager OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Assistant Construction Manager role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not the job title. If you graduated with a degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related STEM-designated field, you likely qualify for the 24-month extension. The role itself must also be directly related to your field of study, which most site coordination and project management positions satisfy. Confirm your CIP code with your DSO.
How do I find Assistant Construction Manager jobs that sponsor OPT students?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for employers willing to sponsor F-1 OPT and visa candidates, so you're not sifting through postings from firms that won't consider international students. Search for Assistant Construction Manager roles there to focus your time on employers already open to your work authorization status.
Can I work on a construction site on OPT, or are there restrictions?
OPT authorizes full-time employment in a role related to your degree, including on-site construction management positions. There are no restrictions specific to physical job sites. The key requirement is that the work ties directly to your field of study. Coordinating subcontractors, reviewing drawings, and managing schedules all qualify under construction management or engineering degrees.
What happens to my OPT authorization if I switch employers mid-project?
OPT is tied to your authorization period, not to a specific employer, so you can change jobs during your OPT window as long as the new role relates to your field of study. You must report the change to your DSO within 10 days. If you're on STEM OPT, your new employer must also enroll in E-Verify and submit a new training plan.
Do construction firms commonly sponsor H-1B visas after OPT for this role?
Sponsorship rates vary significantly by firm size and project volume. Large general contractors and construction management companies such as Turner Construction, Skanska, and Jacobs have documented H-1B filing histories for project management roles. Mid-size regional contractors with consistent pipeline work also sponsor when they've invested in training a candidate. Research individual employers before committing to your job search.
