OPT Dietitian Jobs
Dietitian jobs on OPT are available at hospitals, outpatient clinics, long-term care facilities, and corporate wellness programs. Most roles require RD or RDN credentials, which means passing the CDR exam before or during your OPT period. STEM OPT extension is not available for dietetics, so a 12-month timeline applies unless you secure H-1B visa sponsorship.

Pursue RD credentialing before OPT begins
Most employers won't consider candidates without RD or RDN credentials. Sitting for the CDR exam during your final semester or immediately after graduation gives you a competitive edge and removes a common hiring barrier before your OPT clock starts.
Target healthcare systems over private practices
Large hospital networks and integrated health systems are significantly more likely to sponsor H-1B visas than small private clinics. Focus your search on employers with established HR and immigration infrastructure, such as academic medical centers and regional hospital chains.
Highlight clinical hours specific to your specialty
Whether your background is clinical nutrition, renal dietetics, or pediatric care, leading with specialty hours on your resume signals immediate value. Specialty dietitians face less competition and are more likely to receive sponsorship consideration from employers filling hard-to-staff roles.
Address OPT authorization proactively in applications
Include a brief, clear line in your cover letter noting your OPT authorization and expected end date. Employers unfamiliar with OPT often screen out international candidates from uncertainty alone. Removing that ambiguity early keeps your application moving through the process.
Prioritize roles with H-1B sponsorship history
Not all dietitian employers sponsor visas. Research which healthcare organizations have filed H-1B petitions for dietitians in the past. Focusing your applications on employers with a documented sponsorship track record dramatically improves your odds of long-term work authorization.
Network through registered dietitian professional associations
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and its state-level affiliate groups hold regular events where hiring managers attend. Building relationships through these channels often surfaces unadvertised roles and gives you a direct conversation about visa sponsorship before formally applying.
Dietitian OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a dietitian on OPT without RD credentials?
Most clinical and hospital dietitian roles require RD or RDN credentials as a condition of employment, not just preference. Working without them on OPT is technically possible in some non-clinical wellness or food service roles, but those positions rarely lead to H-1B sponsorship. Passing the CDR exam before your OPT start date is strongly advisable.
Is a dietitian role considered a STEM job for OPT extension purposes?
No. Dietetics and nutrition programs are classified under CIP codes that do not appear on the DHS STEM OPT Designated Degree Program List. This means most dietitian graduates on F-1 OPT receive a standard 12-month authorization period, not the 24-month STEM extension. Planning your H-1B sponsorship timeline around the 12-month window is essential.
Where can I find dietitian jobs that sponsor OPT and H-1B visas?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and surfaces dietitian roles at employers with a history of visa sponsorship. General job boards show every open position without filtering for sponsorship willingness, which wastes time. Searching on Migrate Mate lets you focus on employers who have already demonstrated they hire international candidates.
Can my dietitian OPT job be part-time or per diem?
OPT regulations require that employment be directly related to your field of study and at least 20 hours per week. Per diem or part-time roles that meet the 20-hour minimum are permissible, but they rarely provide a path to H-1B sponsorship. Full-time positions at established healthcare employers give you the best combination of compliance and long-term immigration viability.
What happens to my OPT if I complete my dietetic internship after graduation?
Your OPT period begins after your program end date is reported in SEVIS, regardless of whether you complete a post-graduate dietetic internship concurrently. If your internship is supervised, unpaid, and part of your credentialing requirements, it may qualify as OPT employment, but confirm with your DSO before starting. Any paid hours must still meet the 20-hour weekly minimum.
