How to Get Visa Sponsorship as an Electrical Engineering Intern
Confirm your program qualifies for STEM OPT extension
Electrical Engineering degrees almost always qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving you 36 months total. Verify your CIP code with your DSO before applying, so you can communicate this advantage clearly to employers during recruiting.
Target employers with established intern sponsorship history
Large semiconductor, defense, and energy companies like Texas Instruments, Lockheed Martin, and Eaton regularly sponsor OPT interns. Smaller startups are less predictable. Prioritize employers with structured internship programs, which typically have legal and HR infrastructure already in place for international students.
Align your application timing with OPT authorization windows
USCIS recommends applying for OPT up to 90 days before your program end date. For summer internships, that means starting the application process in January or February. Missing this window can delay your start date, which is a dealbreaker for many internship programs.
Highlight hardware and lab skills that are harder to offshore
Electrical Engineering internships involving hands-on lab work, PCB design, or physical testing are more likely to require on-site presence, which increases employer willingness to work with OPT students rather than outsourcing the role entirely.
Clarify the STEM OPT E-Verify requirement to employers proactively
STEM OPT extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Many large engineering employers already are, but confirm before accepting an offer. If they are not enrolled, they cannot legally employ you under the extension, regardless of intent.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can I work as an Electrical Engineering Intern on OPT without employer sponsorship?
Yes. During your OPT period, your EAD card is your work authorization and requires no employer petition or sponsorship filing. The employer simply needs to verify your eligibility through I-9. For the 24-month STEM OPT extension, your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify, but no additional visa filing is needed on their part.
Does an Electrical Engineering internship qualify as OPT-related employment?
Yes, as long as the internship is directly related to your degree field. Electrical Engineering internships in power systems, circuit design, embedded systems, hardware testing, or semiconductor fabrication all qualify. The work must be at least 20 hours per week during post-completion OPT. Your DSO will need to confirm the role meets this standard if requested.
Where can I find Electrical Engineering Intern jobs that are OPT-friendly?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters for employers open to international work authorization. Searching there saves time compared to applying broadly and discovering late in the process that a company does not work with OPT students. The platform is designed around the realities of F-1 status and OPT timelines.
Does my Electrical Engineering degree qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension?
Electrical Engineering is one of the most consistently STEM-designated degree programs. Most EE degrees fall under CIP codes that qualify, but eligibility is determined by your specific institution and program, not the field name alone. Confirm with your DSO and check your program's CIP code. If it qualifies, you have up to 36 months of total OPT work authorization.
What happens if my Electrical Engineering internship ends before my OPT expires?
You can continue job searching during your remaining OPT window, but OPT requires that you are employed or actively seeking employment in your field. Extended gaps without documented job search activity can jeopardize your status. Post-completion OPT allows up to 90 days of cumulative unemployment, so tracking and documenting your search is essential during any transition period.
